California / Oregon Coast
Good evening:
We'll be taking a trip up Highway 101 along the California / Oregon Coast later in the year. We plan on making it a 3 leg trip with 2 stops for two or three days each while on the way to our final destination in Coos Bay. Looking for recommendations for RV parks for the two intermediate stops. The first stop will be somewhere between Garberville (Considering Benbow KOA) and Fortuna. The second stop will be between Klamath and Brookings.
Anyone with some good experiences in those 2 areas?
Thanks in advance.
Cheers,
Mike

CA - Ancient Redwood RV for your first stop. Right in the heart of the big redwoods and very nice easy trails among them
OR - Brookings - Harris Beach State Park, Site #15, A Loop - very nice
.. a little farther north on 101 - Cape Blanco State Park - no reservations but we've always gotten a site. Awesome beach and lighthouse.
We used these with our 40' Dutch Star

X2 on Ancient Redwood in Redcrest. We logged 100000 miles in the last 8 years and this is one of the most peaceful places we have been. Beautiful little park all paved and full hook ups. Great bicycle riding on the Ave of the Giants. Stunning.

MikeyG- having ran this coastline several times over the years, my biggest suggestion would be - RUN IT FROM NORTH TO SOUTH! The reason being- 99% of the pull overs & lookouts are on the coast (west) side of the road & it's much easier & safer pulling off & on from the South bound lanes than to try & cross all the traffic. You will see some magnificent scenery & country!
Happy Trails

We do the Oregon coast every other year. Seaside in Brookings (as mentioned) is good. When we stay in Coos Bay, we've always stayed at the Mill Casino Campground. But.....there is a brand new park, right on the water, called Bay Point. Very nice, but still has that new look with young landscaping.
When in Coos Bay, take a ride over to the coast, Cape Arago Hwy (about 20 minutes away). There is a nice beach called Sunset Bay, a sea lion over look a few minutes further up the road (thousands of sea lions - all males) and just past that is a really nice garden (Shore Acres) that you can walk through, several acres of roses and other local plants. We often pick up a seafood lunch and eat it at Sunset Bay. We've kayaked there a couple of times.

A few miles north of Bandon you can cut over to Charleston on West Beaver Hill Rd/Seven Devils Road. Sunset Bay State Park is a nice park. I used to live nearby at Cape Arago lighthouse.
I lived in Coos Bay 79-83 and then in Reedsport till 86. I was back on that part of the coast for the first time in 2015. i was very disappointed, it was run down and shabby. Commercial fishing and crabbing is nearly gone, the lumber industry has just about disappeared as well. Without the casino, Coos Bay would be little more than a wide spot in the road.

We have made yearly trips to Oregon for years, we really like Indian creek campground on the Rogue River, it’s rustic and you camp on a grass area. Great views of the river, puts you in a great place to do a jet boat tour if they are running. 30 minutes north of Coos Bay is Winchester Bay RV, it’s awesome and worth the drive back and forth to Coos Bay. There is an oyster farm close if you like that kind of thing.

Thanks for all the great advice guys. I'll look into all of those recommended parks.
Capt. Bill: We're running S to N for the beginning of the trip. That way I can see the views instead of the DW saying "Oh look!". Discussing if we'll return the same route or head up to Pacific Shores, then back to I5 or South and hit Bandon for a couple rounds or???? So many decisions and opportunities. I love it.
Don: As always. Great advice. Thank you. We have a reservation at Oceanside in Coos Bay for the week. I've driven through the area, but we were high tailing it back from Bandon and didn't stop, so I'm looking forward to spending some time in the area.
Have a great weekend.
Cheers.

We stayed in Fortuna in our 2016 DS 4018 a few years ago. It was a nice clean park with nice pads and no dusty dirt! I don’t think it had a dog park, but there was a place to walk her to get the job done

I've done that trip twice, both ways. You will have a great time!

Cape Arago is beautiful and the nicest beach on that part of the coast. The botanical gardens are also worth a visit. The Portside Restaurant in Charleston was nice back in my time, I dont even know if it is still open. A day trip to Gold and Silver falls is a nice drive in a TOAD.

Give this spot a look in Brookings:
https://www.atriversedge.com/
If you can get a riverfront site it’s really nice. We also really enjoy Ancient Redwoods as others have mentioned. We have probably visited there at least half a dozen times and always enjoyed.
Several months ago we stayed at Bay Point Landing and in all honesty, unless you get a waterfront site, we found it lacking. At least that was the DW and my conclusion. Would probably rather stay at the Mill Casino, but that’s just us.
Love the California/Oregon coast
