Caynon Star and class A/exempt license
I know this has been asked before but I’m still a bit confused. For those of you familiar with Texas laws I understand that you need a class a exempt license for an RV with a GVWR above 26,001lbs. Mine is 26,000lbs and my GCWR is 30,000lbs. So since that’s less than 10,000lbs my understanding is that I do not need a class A/exempt license. Am I reading this correctly? Thanks Steve

The 26,000 number in my state MA. you can drive gas coach 26,000 lb with your car drivers licence, its over the 26,000 lb for diesels in most cases, is when you have to get B licence, plus air brakes test.

Same in Georgia. 26,000 and less is regular license. 26,001 and up is Class E or F. Only need written test and street sign test to get the E or F license.

You really need to ask the Texas licensing people this question. Each state has its own rules and just because Georgia or Massachusetts does it one way is no guaranty that Texas does it the same way.

Your best bet is to go to the Texas DPS website to be sure.
From my understanding, any RV combination of 26,001 lbs and and over, requires either a Class A or a Class B license. Even if your rig weighs less than that amount, but its maximum weight rating is 26,001 lbs or more, then the upgraded license is required.
In Texas, a commercial license is not required for RV's, hence the Class A and Class C designated licenses.

From the DPS website:
“Class B Driver License:
A Class B driver license permits a person to drive: A single vehicle with a gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of 26,001 lbs. or more and any such vehicle towing either a vehicle with a GVWR that does not exceed 10,000 lbs.”

You don't need a Class A non-CDL, UNLESS, you're towing over 10,000lbs
You don't need a Class B non-CDL, UNLESS your GVWR is OVER 26000lbs.
There's a reason a lot of these newer class a coaches are right at 26000lbs

That 26,000 lb rating has been around for a long time for gassers. I have not looked at diesels to see if any were in that range as the drive train alone is significantly heavier than a gas drive train.

Each state has its own idea about this subject.

One other thing that should be mentioned is that the requirements of the state where your license is issued supersede those of any other state you are driving in. The other states must honor what your license allows in your home state.

Sorry, I meant to say Class A diesel, eg the Forza 34T and some sportscoaches for example.

Pic of my class B. GVWR >= 26001 lbs provided towed vehicle is <= 10,000
If you have a truck and 5th wheel over 10K or an RV over 26001 AND tow over 10K, a class A is required.
