Ceiling led removal 2015 DSDP

I am currently fighting with a 3 inch led. I am trying to remove the the dead light and I have a new replacement. So far I have not damaged the surrounding material. What am I doing wrong? I have tried using a clean new putty knife but can’t seem to engage the clips so they will release. HELP

They're very difficult to remove. The clips snap them into place, but as far as I know, there is no way to release the clip. You remove the light by pulling it straight down, which collapses the clips, releasing the light. You need to get a grip on the light and pull.

Sounds like the same lights I have. They have a torsion spring clip on each side, and basically work just like the old wooden mouse traps, and are 4 or 5 times stronger than they need to be.
I had my best success by sliding the light to one side of the hole, so one clip is more exposed in the hole, then pulling down on the side where the biggest part of the hole is.
A putty knife has nothing to do with getting them out.
If you have a new light you know how stiff the springs are.

Luckily, I've always had big strong hands, so I'm able to pull on those lights and pull them down. It is getting harder to remove them as I get older. You ight want to make yourself a tool. As a matter of fact, a tool made to remove them would probably be a good seller.

If you can picture this, take two old butter knives and bend the last inch of the knife in a vice to a right angle. You may even want to wrap some tape on the handle to make them bigger and easier to grip. Hook both ends of the butter knife, under opposite sides of the light, and pull down.

I use a strong plastic shim that I slid between the ceiling and the edge of the light frame. Can use two if you like and just twist it down and the edge of the light will come with it. Remove the lens first to make it easier for you. My replacements had the mouse trap springs but the original lights that came with the coach just has 3 angled springs which were easier to get out, they're straight up and down, compression type.

Also, make sure your fingers are out of the way when the springs clear the edge of the hole and snap down with enough power to make a grown man cry.

This is the replacement I received from Newmar. I haven’t removed the dead one and will get a few “suggested tools” from the hardware store. I am currently at the river in Parker AZ.

That one is similar to what I removed from my 2015 4018 so yours might be the same as well. When you start to pull down a side take a look for that silver spring. Pull from there as well as the opposite side. Should come out easy.

NEWMAR was supposed to have replaced all 53 (if I counted right) of mine in 2016 since I had either 10 or 11 out or blinking at that time. Wonder what kind of tool the techs there used at the time to have to remove that many one after another - if they actually did since I have 2 blinking right now again. My hands hurt just thinking about trying to get those 2 down by myselft. I have 2 new ones from Newmar as replacements.
