Chassis
Hi, finalizing a build on Baystar 3414. It has a standard 22000 chassis but dealer told me Newmar would allow special order on 24000 for additional 3500 to $4000. Already spent more then I want (lol) but do you feel as experienced rv'ers that it's necessary? Thanks!

I would do it, When we bought ours the 24K chassis was standard on the Canyon Star. Ours was ordered with the 26K chassis as an upgrade and it was a $3360 increase in the cost, at the time. So the cost is in about the right ballpark. As far as ride, it rides great and seems to handle better than the ones we drove with the smaller chassis. The big thing is it gave us additional NCC, and even my wife can't put enough in the MH to overload it. I guess it would depend on what the NCC is with the 22k chassis, and how you like the drive. We are glad we did as it drives great and the next year the Canyon Star came standard with the 26K chassis.

It's always best to consider items that you can't add after the fact. Are those numbers at retail before any discounts?

I'd do it personally, Our coach is just under GVWR on the rear axle, it was over by 400lb when I had 1000lb of lead acid batteries in a compartment towards the front. Front axle still had extra capacity. If I could have I'd have jumped at the opportunity, but the 24K chassis was not available in 2008.

On ours it was a all a part of the total MSRP, so the price we actually paid was less the discount. So in reality we did not pay the $3360 that was a part of the MSRP.

Excellent point, we actually haven't test drove it. It's being built. Not one on lot to drive.

I'd do it, you can almost never have too heavy a chassis.

I agree and could only make ride smoother. Not excited about going over budget but feel it will be worth it.

I did it on the Bay Star (3406) we are taking delivery of on Monday. For the cost versus not having to worry about how many people or how much water I can carry made it worth the extra cost.

2018 BayStar specs:
22,000-pound chassis: Approx. NCC = 2,822
24,000-pound chassis: Approx NCCC = 2,822 + 2,000 - 500 ( add'l chassis weight) = 4,322
This provides much better margin against max-ing out the coach weight. Then there's the issue of the towing capacity, which is related:
22,000-pound chassis; GVWR = 22,000, GCWR = 26,000, Difference = 4,000
24,000-pound chassis: GVWR = 24,000, GCWR = 30,000, Difference = 6,000
Hitch is rated for 5,000 in both cases- but with the 24,000-pound chassis, you can actually pull up to 5,000 pounds without having to "borrow" NCC. NOTE: If you did go with the smaller chassis, and had a 5,000-pound toad, and did have to "borrow" NCC, you'd be down to 1,822 pounds of NCC- quite small for a coach this size.
"In for a penny, in for a pound." (or, 2,000 pounds, pun intended) You can't change the chassis later. If I were you, I'd get the 24,000-pound chassis, without question. I'd even give up other options to get it. If you can have it all, though, do! It's only money.

The only actual difference in the 24/26K chassis is the rear spring rating. They hold the GCWR @ 30K for both likely due to the braking rating. If I was buying new I would go with the 26K just be sure you have a good brake system on the toad if you are over the 30K.
This is the 2016 chassis info easier read than the 2018 I sent earlier 2017 is same info. https://www.fleet.ford.com/truckbbas...16_F53_F59.pdf

I agree with everyone else, I'd do it for sure! We have a 3401 with the standard 22,000k chassis and love it, but have to be careful about loading it up. I'd gladly pay out a chunk of change to have more capacity. I can modify and upgrade all sorts of stuff, but can't up the chassis cap.
