Chassis battery not charging?

Just got a new 2022 Dutch Star 4326.

I had the dealer install solar and upgrade to Lithium before delivery.

I've had the rig for a week, plugged into 50A the whole time. Today I checked the rig and saw chassis battery was down to 11.5v. I tried running the genny for a while, didn't really improve. When I tried to start main engine, I ended up having to jump start. I let it run for 30 minutes or so, and got a few points of voltage - so it looks like the alternator is working.

For now, I've plugged the chassis battery into a separate trickle charger, and have validated that the voltage is slowly going up, so I shouldn't damage the batteries any further.

I'll have the dealer look at it, just curious if there are any suggestions on what I could do to debug this ahead of time?

Since I've been RV'ing I've seen this same question probably 100's of times. Manufacturers often save a few bucks, even on high end rigs, by eliminating an AUX charging system for the Chassis batteries when plugged into shore power. And so over time, between 3-5 days for flooded cell, likely longer for Lithium, they discharge because of all the phantom loads on them. Like the dash radio, engine, and tranni memories, and the CO and propane detectors, and of course the entrance steps.

So what most owners do is get a small 2.5 amp trickle/float charger from Walmart and hook it up if there is power nearby, like in a compartment so the wires aren't showing. OR, we buy a Trik-L-Start, with just 3 wires...wire it from the house batteries to the chassis batteries and boom, done.

Let us know what the dealer says.

My coach does not charge the engine battery when plugged into shore power so I use the engine battery disconnect switch so it doesn't run down.

We will see what dealer and Newmar says tomorrow.

The auto-gen start has chassis voltage as a trigger, but it didn't kick off when the chassis battery got low. Running the gen didn't seem to charge the chassis batteries either (ran it for about an hour, didn't really seem to help).

The auto-gen start and gen -> chassis is a must fix, that is clearly a "promise" made by Newmar with the features.

If they don't have shore power -> chassis charge, I'll be pretty disappointed, but I don't think I can force them to fix it, i'll probably just have to pay to get it wired in.

I see you live in Western Washington.

There's a company in Everett , Wa. named Magnum Energy , Inc.

They solved my chassis battery charging issue .

They have a product called " Magnum Battery Combiner" . It's about the size of a deck of cards . All wires are color coded with necessary terminals already attached .

It comes with clear instructions and their phone customer service is great .

It allows both the house bank and chassis battery to be charged and maintained by both the shore power and/or the engine alternator automatically . No manual switches required .

I installed it 5 years ago and it has worked flawlessly .

All batteries always at full charge .

I had the same problem on my 22 KSDP at first. Looked in the manual and this is what to ask your dealer. “ When the coach is connected to shore power or when the coach generator is in use (when shore power is unavailable), the converter or inverter/converter combination recharges the house batteries, and with the assistance of a BIM, BIRD, or Charge Bridge, it can also charge the chassis batteries.

Then on my KIB panel on the tank level page at the top showed how much charge was going into the house and chassis battery. This was on shore power. See if you have a similar display. Finally always turn your chassis battery off as posted above. Mine no longer runs down but I always watch it. (Another topic you can search here is the solar charger to battery - mine had no charge controller to limit voltage into chassis battery). Might want to ask about that also. Hope some of this helps.

Last suggestion is to verify dealer changed the battery type on your charger to lithium or whatever is compatible with lithium. Good hunting.

Your DS came with a BIM to allow for charging of the chassis batteries. It probably should have been swapped out for a LI-BIM which would take into consideration the high draw of the lithiums. I would go back to the folks who installed the batteries and ask the if they changed how your rig charges the chassis batteries. Generally the BIM or li-BIM can be found in the compartment with the 50amp hookup.

Ditto your BIM is likely the problem and should have been upgraded to the Lithium version. Also possible the BIM has failed. My 2022 4369 also has a solar charger for chassis batteries from the factory.

Chassis battery not charging?

Recommend you read the below thread on the issue and what I believe is the solution that Newmar has implemented (at least for the first person having Nappanee take care of it)

Wow, thanks for all the info. I did get a callback from Newmar, and yes, my BIM should have been charging my chassis battery from shore or gen. Of course Newmar can't comment on what my dealer did when they installed the Lithium + Solar setup, so all signs point to them either not installing the Lithium-BIM or messing up cabling that prevent the chassis charging.

Thanks flyboy013 for the comment on the Solar potentially interfering, i'll be sure to make sure my dealer checks that so I don't have the over voltage problem that FloridaSun is showing.

Even the regular (non lithium) BIM would allow for charging of the chassis batteries from the house batteries. Where you would need the lithium BIM is when you want to charge from the alternator to the house batteries while driving. Without the lithium BIM alternator charging will seldom if ever occur.

Either something is wrong with your present BIM or the dealer did not install everything properly.

You need to verify they have the green BIM installed and the inverter is able to do lithium batteries. Without knowing what was installed and how canít provide any more information. Who is the dealer that did the installation? Where and what equipment was installed as well?
