Coach Entry Steps

The steps on my coach are not fully retracting. They go out perfectly, but when retracting, they are stopping at about the 90% mark. At that point, I can manually push the steps in a bit, but still not fully.

I replaced the control module a few years ago and the motor is original as far as I know.

Does this sound like a motor problem? There are no odd noises at all.

Sounds like a lubrication problem. Shoot WD-40 into every part that moves, including the motor arm. I would also have mentioned removing any carpet you have on the step, but I see from the picture you don't have any.

x-2........ I would get under and see if any thing is bent or binding also have someone operate the step's in and out just keep hands clear of moving part's.

Lubricate with Corrosion X & check rails & bracket - with steps extended-to ensure you don't have an obstruction-dried mud, bent rail etc.

Happy Trails

Lubricate with Corrosion X or, my favorite, Boeshield T7. WD40 is an OK light lubricant, and a decent water displacer, but doesn't have the anti-corrosion properties of the others mentioned.

OK, so lubricate it is. I'll circle back to let you know the results.

Mine won’t budge at all, a few shots of lube and they work like new.

The reason I mentioned using WD-40 was to free up any corrosion. I agree it is not a good long term lubricant, for which I use a white lithium grease spray. But the others mentioned are good too.

So far, I’m underwhelmed by the results. I shot a good bit of Boeshield on the hinges, bolts, and gear mechanism. At least they are quieter.

Have you checked for an obstruction in the track". Pebble, small stick, wad of paper, etc. Or, a bent link?

These look like the Coach Step steps that we had on the Canyon Star, except we had the three step version. In 2013 I had to completely disassemble them and replace the brass bushings, which were worn out. Also replaced the shoulder bolts, nuts and washers. When we sold the coach in 2018 it still operated as good as new. Got the parts from Lippert during one of our drives by Elkhart.

Note we had the same underwhelming results lubricating these, we lubed them for many years to coax more life out of them before we broke down and rebuilt them.

Not in detail. The weather has turned and I’ll get back to it when the rain stops later this weekend. Thanks.

When you scooch under there on your back, take another close look at all linkage pivot points. 14 years can grind a lot of metal off if a part gets a little bend in it, and stuff will jam up.
