Cord reels

Our 05 DS has the powered cord reel that was available as an option in that year.

It is the type that has a large bucket that holds the cord. It takes up a fair amount of space. Was wondering if anyone has changed one of this style reel for one similar to what is used now?

Am wanting to add a hard wired surge guard so was looking for any way to gain some space

IMHO the bucket type is much more reliable than the reel type. The reel types have slip ring contacts that can and have failed at inopportune moments, the bucket type does not. I personally would stick with the bucket type due to that reason.

They do make transfer switches with Surge Guard electronics built in, don't know how much bigger they are if any but maybe you can replace your existing transfer switch?

Good information to know.

I was unaware of the combination surge protection and transfer switch combo

Will do some research

Thanks

It is true that there isn't a whole lot of room in the electrical bay. I hardwired/installed a Progressive Ind protection device in mine and decided the best place was to attach it to the face of the xfer switch box.

My dutch aire has the bucket type (made by Glendinning) I Think, the previous owner removed the bucket and installed a 2 x 6 to keep the hose contained in the and covered it in the same floor cover as the belly storage. It works real well and does allow more space in the hose real compartment. If it fails the gears are replaceable at a reasonable price.

Do it. I replaced my cord bucket with a TRC Shoreline reel five years ago -- no problems so far. This leaves plenty of room for a surge guard.

I installed a TRC (now Southwire) Model 40250.

Note since Southwire acquired TRC, they now offer a Limited Lifetime Warranty just like Progressive (whose warranty degraded after they were acquired).
