Crankshaft Pulley Failure

We have a 2011 VTDP 4333 with Tag. On July 25th, we experienced a crankshaft pulley failure. The motor in our coach is a Cummins ISC 360 HP. Fortunately for us, we were in Elkhart, Indiana at the time with an HWH Jack issue and we were able to get it to Onan of Indiana (a local Cummins shop) (and thank you Spartan Chassis for recommending them). They were able to secure the part and fix our ailing coach. We are back on the road!

My question is, has anyone experienced this type of failure. Onan of Indiana thought it might be due to rust but they are not sure either. To me, it looks like the metal has been sheared or torn off. Take a look at the pictures and tell me what you think.

The motor has 50,140 miles.

Thanks in advance!

Looks to me like pulley too thin and edge weld cracked due drive load of all accessories, did you get a chance to see new one regarding any changes to it. Bet its a little thicker.

Something hit the pulley. If the pulley would have failed, from bad welds it would have let the belt slip off and it would not have that bend in it.

Was the replacement , the same ??
Steel ?
Most Cummins engines that I've worked on the serpentine belt drive / harmonic balancer is machined from cast iron.

EDIT: Sorry I guess I spent too much time on 5.9 Cummins repair , Just not what I was used to seeing . Found an image of your belt drive on line , but no other pictures of a failure like yours.
First image , 5.9 balancer and belt drive .
Second , an ISC part.
I've learned something today ... guess it's time to hang it up for the night.

Question. Why does your failed pulley say "Harbor Freight" on it?

That would explain why it failed

Could be something hit it , could be someone priced against it working on something else recently, but if you look in the weld break it’s all rusty not shinny been that way for a while.

It looks like it was hit, but I think if part of the weld went bad, the power of the serpentine belt, folded it like that when one portion of it broke loose.

Seen this issue mentioned on a few of this model Cummins. May be worth taking a look at it on some other coaches

It would be interesting to see the proximity of this pulley to the "Newmar Road Scraper" below. Not hard to imagine the scraper tossing a rock up into the pulley above.

Crankshaft Pulley Failure

In would have expected a machined casting in that application, not a pully welded up as this one appears to be. I agree with Don that some road debris may have got tossed up into the belt area and tore it up.

I’ve got the same engine in a 2010 - 4333. I just took a look at mine. There is a shield at the front of the pulley, and the pulley assembly sits above a motor mount. Very unlikely something from road bounced up and damaged it. I can’t even see the pulley were the belt rides due to the shield.

Certainly needs to be replaced. New belt too. I am sure that will address the issue.
Is it a matter of who is paying? ie: a manufacturers defect vs. maintenance vs. accident damage?
2011 MY, doesn't make any difference...hopefully you got the labor and part at a reasonable price.
