Cross winds

Just got back from Colorado and the cross winds in New Mexico and Texas. Has my wife thinking about selling the motorhome (2007 Canyon Star 3205). I am trying to tell her a diesel with comfort steer? Will solve the cross wind problems and the noise going up the mountains. Am I wrong or do I have hope

You do have hope Stuart. Get a NEWMAR DP with Comfort Steer. You can't go wrong.

Is your CS on a Ford chassis? It's a high revving engine and gets noisy at full throttle when climbing a grade. DP does not, you are correct.

As for the wind, a heavier coach and handling of a DO is less impacted. Depends on how windy the wind.

If you like your coach other than the handling, make
a few changes to the chassis like I did.It will be night and day.Go
to the Ford chassis section for info.

My tag axle '07 with non adjustable comfort steer just laughs at crosswinds except for the hit on MPG. Like others have said in previous threads you don't even realize the wind is blowing until you stop and get out. Years ago I owned both a 27' class C and a 37' class A. Night and day difference to my rear diesel.

We own a 2016 VTDP. At 37' it is one of the smaller and lighter of the Newmar line. We have 7200 miles on the coach and have been up and down the I80, I70, I90, and I40. All are windy. Drove through a few thunderstorms with 40-60mph gusts.

I think Newmar DP being heavy in their class and the addition of Comfort Drive make the coach as stable as it can be. In our coach I do slow down to 55 when in very gusty sidewinds. That's just me but without active air the coach does lean a little. It takes some practice getting use to not correcting in the gusts as the Comfort Drive takes care of this. You do still need to drive the coach. Comfort Drive wouldn't correct for everything. The larger and heavier coaches are even more stable.

I've driven a gas class A 38' in heavy winds and there is no comparison. The DP wins hands down. JMHO YMMV.

That's the reason we sold our gasser and went with a DP. We have a 36' Ventana and with the heavier chassis and Comfort Drive, it's a much more enjoyable ride. The engine in the back makes it much quieter too.

Had the Workhorse, fine machine but yes you have the engine right under you. Got the desiel, it is like having an electric motor pushing you, soo quiet. About 1/3 the front axle banging that the Workhorse had. Windy crosswinds , what wind? Finger tip steering.

We upgraded to a DP from a gasser two years ago and the change in drivability, quietness, and quality of interior design helped us make that decision. Even though it's the entry-level Newmar DP, we love it for our needs!

IMO a diesel with comfort drive will be a nice improvement. However I have encountered cross winds in my 2015 43' DSDP that made me call it a day. We crossed KS in May and I would say cross wind might have been 30 mph sustained with gusts in the 50 mph range. All trucks, RV;s, and busses were listing and some fairly dramatic. We say one class A going down the road with main awning partially unrolled due to wind.

We had a 2008 Ventana with comfort drive, it was 33' and it still was a handful in a crosswind.

You need length and a tag axle to see the biggest difference.

I've said it before; we could never make our 33' handle/behave like our 43' does. Its just not possible.

The best way to see it first hand is drive your MH to a local dealer (with your DW) on a day with really strong winds. Then test drive a 36' and then test drive a tag.

You will see for yourself.

Of course, the longer coaches with tags are going to handle better than the shorter coaches even if they are DPs but the difference in even the shorty DPs and an equivalent length gasser is remarkable. Heavier chassis, engine in the back, larger tires all make a difference.
