At the 10 months mark (just over 5,500 miles) my oil pan gasket showed some leakage. Of course Cummins covered it all under factory warranty. That is the only issue I have had.

We went with an extended warranty but just on the coach, not on the engine/tranny. Our goal was to have most things covered for the first 5 years of ownership.

I do not own a DP I have a Tiffen open road gas but I will be retiring in 2 years & have been looking at the Dutch Star, we just love the looks of this coach, that is my goal.

As long as you have it inspected you can't go wrong with a Dutch Star. We almost bought one.

My neighbor showed me his new truck engine with EGR removed and plates where it used to reside. Also some other things where missing. I would be scared to do this on an engine, still covered by Cummins! Sounds like my 5.9 in my older pu truck.

I know this is an old thread, but I've seen many people talking about the egr cooler going bad in these engines (ISL).
Would you mind me asking what symptoms indicated that the egr cooler is bad?

Thanks.

The most common symptoms that you will encounter will be egr & egr temp codes. But the most basic is the excessive use of coolant. We keep track of our coolant usage at work & just a general indication would be if you are putting 2 qts of coolant in every 200-300 miles. When we notice a lot of coolant being use we pressure test the coolant system & if no visible leaks are present then we start looking into the exhaust system for coolant being present.
Hope this helps
Thanks
Bob

Yes, thank you, this makes sense.
2 qts of coolant every few hundred miles is alot, so that would be pretty obvious.

I had an ISL 400 in a 2005 Allegro, at 40,000 miles it blew, Cummins wouldn’t even give me 10 per cent on parts, thank goodness it didn’ t hurt the Turbo or block, cost me about 12 grand, I guess you can do that when basically you are the only supplier of RV engines.
And yes all the maintenance was performed on the engine

Arty, did they determine what the cause was or give you any sort of explanation?

Cummins did the work and I told them I wanted all the parts, I got everything except one oiler, sprays oil on the piston, never got it back, they said it was misplaced. Had a Mechanic look at it before it went to Cummins and he said he bet that one of the oilers was bad, so I guess that answered the question why I didn’t get it back.
It was a mess met with Cummins, wrote letters, but at the end of the day no help.

Disappointing they weren't more helpful.
I wonder if there is a way to "keep an eye" on the oilers? Through diagnostics or something? It's got me thinking, a blown engine is a dang unacceptable way to find out a part is failing, or has failed. Like the valve failures in #6 with the ISX 600 of certain years, what a disaster.
Some things are cheap in life, you run it till it breaks and fix it, no big deal. But a diesel engine sure doesn't fall into that category in my world.

As far as i know, not a Mechanic, but there would be no way to keep an eye on the oiler, only good thing i can say is Cummins in Jefferson Ga. done the work, when i got it back i really checked it over found one spot of grease on the engine door and everything else was back where it was suppose to be, hats off to the Tech.

Ditto. Mine was replaced at the six month mark, give or take.

Muggsnme thanks for the info you provided. We are buying a 2016 Dutch Star 4018 to replace our current gas coach, that has served us very well.I do most of my own maintenance, so any info on Diesel engines is appreciated.

Your very welcome, hope it helps, best of luck with getting a diesel pusher.
I also want to add about the oilers.
Here is the best system diagnosis explanation I can give.
No there is no way to tell they are going bad but, if you get a code of low oil pressure say around 8-10 lbs at idle & approx 25-28 lbs driving at around 50-60 mph, that could be one of the problems. This is a very vague explanation of what it could be. When we had this happen in our shop, check engine codes came up with low oil pressure then would go out, & come back on, through out the day but would never stay on constant.
We put a manual pressure gauge on it & the specs were very close to what CUMMINS requires, but as we dug deeper into finding the rout cause, we found the Oiler for #6 piston the tip was broken, causing the low oil pressure code. Luckily no further damage was done, it was caught in time. I hope this helps answer some of the questions or concerns.
Thanks
Bob
