I have called and written. As stated elsewhere, I was told to run on Max - that humidity will cause the moisture problem. No other fix offered. Non-responsive as far as I'm concerned.

Newmar response

Here is what I got from Newmar Customer service:

Hello Michael,

I spoke with our service shop and here is some info that I found out.

With the dash ac being used, it brings in the outside air to cool the interior of the coach. If there is a substantial amount of humidity, it is not uncommon to have the condition you are experiencing.

By using the “Max Air” position of the dash ac, this closes off the vent for the outside air and uses the interior air to cool the coach. Using that position in humid conditions will reduce or eliminate the issue you are experiencing.

You will probably not find this concern in low to non humid conditions.

I hope this helps,
Carl

Also:

Michael,

Thanks for the response.

It would be very hard to control this type of concern when the outside air is what is used with the ac mode and if there is humidity involved.

We appreciate your concern and if there is something that develops that can improve this condition, we would be willing to relay this on to our customers.

Thanks again,
Carl

I wrote back saying this was unacceptable. So far, no response since May 27.

padre44 I'd give this advise a try while your waiting. You will get more cool air with the bottom vents of Evans unit. The shudder closed for MAX does not move as much air through AC unit.
Newmar & other MFG's had problems back in 2004 with water getting into the air filter of Workhorse chassis, they came out with a fix but it didn't work.
Most of us solved their problem with a $15 bulb seal around our front hoods.
Some times we RVers come up with something better than what the engineers will do at greater expense.
Its a simple fix, IF they come up with something better so be it.

Update:
Customer service non-responsive - said to run on Max. No other fix suggested. Not acceptable to me. Several email exchanges to no effect. Finally wrote to owner of company. No response. Wrote to president of company. No response. This had been going on since early May. Finally filed a complaint with Better Business Bureau. Just a few days later, I got a call saying they would work with me to rectify problem at local shop. Was told they have 4 units in factory shop with the same problem and they have a fix with some kind of baffle to divert air from being forced into unit and blowing water. Have an appointment next week to get this done. Bay Star and other gasser owners who have this problem, don't accept it - push to get it fixed as the unit should work as designed. Maybe now Newmar will put the fix in all gasser units to prevent this problem since it is a design problem.

I don't know about other Canyon Star owners, but this has NOT been an issue on my coach.

For anyone interested, I took the coach into Cheek & Shockley in Richmond, VA who is a authorized service center for Newmar. They also are a great place to do business with. Later the same day (8/8/11) they called me and said the coach was finished, but I'd have to try it out to see if the fix worked. I picked it up the next day and everything worked fine. They fashioned a baffle out of metal and fastened it in front of the Evans unit to divert air from being forced through the unit. I assume Newmar is doing something similar to the units in their shop in Indiana.

First photo is what I made to try to fix problem. It is crude because I didn't have necessary tools to fabricate if correctly. It is made of aluminum flashing and was attached to a/c unit by industrial velcro. However, it worked.

Second photo is one Cheek & Shockley fabricated and installed. I wanted it done so Newmar would feel some responsibility for fixing this, and because I figured a qualified service shop could do a more professional job. I was right - it looks better and it works too. I don't know if Newmar sent them a drawing or other instructions on what to do or if the service tech at Cheek & Shockley came up with it on his own after I described the problem. It is fastened at the bottom by screws into the fire wall and the top looks like it is double sided tape.

Latest mod worked

Last post showed photos of a fix I did, then a fix by a local shop. Unfortunately, it did not wrap around the right side which still let air in and forced water in. This photo is what I did to stop that - looks crude but it worked on a 45 mile trip in warm humid weather.

My wife and I just recently bought a used 2009 Baystar 3201 with 15K miles that has this exact problem. Does anyone know if fixes mentioned by padre44 and yes2baystar solve this problem or if there is anything else I can do. On our trip this weekend using the AC we took in a lot of water on the passenger side so the previous owner either did not use it enough to know this was an issue or ignored it.

Thanks in advance.
