DD-13 Coolant Temps
I understand the Essex has an option for using a Detroit DD-13 as an engine. I think I've read in this section that one or two folks have the option on their Newmars. If so, what are your coolant temps when climbing hills/mountains? The 400ISL in my old coach never got over 205. The DD-13 in my new one rapidly climbs to 223 or so before the fan kicks on and cooling it back down. I called Freightliner and they said as long as no lights or warning bells go off its probably OK. Just wondering what other owners of this engine are experiencing in the real world.

Either their aren't any DD-13's being sold or the new owners of them are "forum-shy".

This would be the response from Cummins too. Our Essex will hit 218 to 220 before fans kick in in the temp drops so I would say you are OK.

No specific insight here, but all the newer diesels are rigged to run hotter now because of the smog equipment - particulate filters, regen cycles, and DEF.

Thanks Tom and HicksRA. I finally tracked down a friend this morning who is running a 2011 Cummins in his truck and he told me the same thing. All the new engines are running hotter. My 06 ISL would set off alarms at 210. When I looked at my Silverleaf on the new coach and read 220 I about panicked. I'll get used to it.

On a 320 mile round trip from Tampa to Naples and back Silver leaf showed that the ISX500 fan kicked in and stayed 100% at 180F and shut off at about 175F. Ambient temp outside 75F. Highest coolant temp noted was 182F. I'll contact Spartan tomorrow and find out the start and stop temp parameters they program to control the fan. I am under the impression at the time that the direct belt drive fans have two speeds; on and off.
Dan, FCCC designed the radiator layout, thermostat temp, and set the fan control parameters on their chassis. They should be able to give you the parameters, although they have little experience with the DD13 in a motorhome chassis at this point.

I just got back from a short trip in central Florida and I saw my temps stay in the 193 max down to the 180's. Isx 500, 2014 Essex.

The first time I noticed it running at 220 I pulled off the road and called Freightliner. The person I talked to didn't know what the DD-13 is supposed to run, but he said since no alarms went off it should be ok. I plan on calling Detroit in the next couple of days. When you had the DD-13 did it run that hot?

I don't recall. I would push the issue with FCCC. They will have to look it up and pull their specs. DD can give you a range, but not the parameters that were spec'ed on the fan control module.
