Deal on the table, 2020 Kountry Star

Opinions wanted: Been dealing with a salesman and manager for a month. 2020 Kountry Star 3412 with about $10k in options. 12000 miles. Not a Newmar dealership. On the lot shy of 2 months.

“Retail” price was $270k, dealer dropped price $10k a week ago. I made an offer and the managers counter now on the table is $236k. This is a 12% drop off their “retail” price.

NADA says low retail is $218k and average retail is $263k. Been searching for comps, even looked at 2019 Ventena LE since that was renamed (so said the internet)Kountry Star for 2020. Searched this forum.

Any opinions if this is a fair price or not?

Thanks

It’s hard saying since the market has changed so much over the last year. It seems high but if it’s the best you can do then that’s the going rate. By comparison I was offered a brand new Ventana 3407 at a dealership early in 2020 for $220k before any negotiations. Back then, offers from dealers of 28%+ off msrp on new rigs were common. Now, probably not.

Also take a close look at specs on bot the 2019 LE and the 2020 KS - there are differences (engine, weight ratings, transmission). Yes the LE line was replaced with the KS line, but they are not entirely comparable.

Good luck with your purchase - as I’m sure you know, the market has changed considerably and not just because of increased costs. A lot has to do with price gouging and what the market will bear based on increased demand.

Below is wholesale and retail pricing but these are guides and the Dealer and the Buyer have to decide what is best for them, especially in todays market. I would be somewhere in between those numbers if I wanted that coach which should give the dealer a lot of profit still. But it is YOUR CALL only that matters if you really want it.

Current JD Power Connect Pricing is:
Value Preview
2020 M-3412 Freightliner 360hp
$197,550 Trade In
$255,550 Used Retail

Also take a look at this - My local dealer has a 2020 kS, 8,000 miles, asking price is $230k, $9k in options. So based on this your deal isn’t that far off now that you’ve done some negotiating.

Ya know what they say, if you want the best deal you've got to be willing to walk away. That said I can tell you that I did not take that advice recently when I bought a coach. I found a coach with exactly what I wanted, actually a little bit more, but all of the things I wanted. I paid $5,000 less than asking price because I probably wasn't going to find the coach I wanted for quite some time. My point being that a few thousand dollars to get what you want vs. getting a better price on something that isn't exactly what you want is the better deal in the long run. Good luck.

If you haven’t done it already, you might also try hitting up North Trail, Steinbring, and NIRVC on new KS pricing. You probably won’t get offers at 28% off MSRP anymore but it might be close enough to make a purchase in a new coach worth considering. They will email you a quote.

It’s a little out of your neighborhood, but DeMartini has two new KS 3412 units on the lot right now and historically they’ve been a very good dealership.

Ask for Matt at North Trail. Never bought from him, but almost and found him to be a straight shooter over there. You never know what pricing you'll get.
