Def 2013 ds?

Going from a 2008 DS with no DEF system to a 2013 DS with a DEF system, what can one expect in terms of DEF to fuel usage ratio?
Thanks

We used about 2 1/2 gallons on our first 1000 miles. We're still new to the DEF thing ourselves.

The first thing I did notice, thou, was the lack of soot on the toad.

Cummins estimated 2% DEF to fuel, or about 1 gallon per 50 gallons of fuel. We're just under that. It'll take 1000 - 1200 miles to use a quarter tank of DEF (2.5 gallons). I generally plan on 7 miles per gallon, average, for my diesel use. That works out to 1.5 to 1.8% DEF to fuel.

Thats very similar to my experience, just under 2% to fuel usage. Price of DEF in bulk or by the 2-1/2 gallon jug seems to coming down over the last few months.

I've heard that the DEF will freeze in cold areas and go bad after a while. True?

So what is the price per gallon of DEF in small qty's? Do the big box stores such as Walmart sell it?
Thanks for the replys so far.

AUTO ZONE carries the 2 1/2 gal boxes. I think I paid $14.99 for 2 1/2 gal box.

DEF will freeze, but that will not shut you down. There is a heater in the tank. The DEF manufacturers, if I remember correctly, estimate a shelf life of about 6 months, ambient temps can positively or negatively affect this. Stored 6 months in a cold climate I'd not worry about it. Stored 6 months in a hot climate may be an issue.

A 2.5 gallon container is about $11 now at Walmart, (or about $4.40 a gallon) up to $15 at gas stations and even truck stops. In bulk, at truck stops, it's well below $3 per gallon, but access can be an issue. I keep a 2.5 gallon container with me and when the guage drops to 3/4s I use it to top off the tank, buying a new container the next time I'm in Walmart, which is usually a long time before I'll need it again.

So far, with 2500 miles on the truck, the DEF light has yet to come on.....
