DEF Consumption
In our 2016 Dutch Star with a 450 cummins whenever I filled up my DEF and divided gallons into miles and I would get about 260-280 miles per gallon. In our 2020 London Aire with a 605 cummins am getting 145 miles. I am little surprise with that. Fuel is pretty close but I have been cruising a little faster. This DEF consumption gap from the DS to LA seems really big to me.

From the Cummins Filtration DEF guide:
https://cumminsfiltration.com/sites/...es/MB10033.pdf
DEF Usage
Q. How much DEF will a truck consume? A. DEF consumption is expected to be approximately 2% of fuel consumption, depending on vehicle operation, duty cycle, geography, load ratings, etc.
Q. What is the number of miles a truck can expect to travel on one gallon of DEF? A. DEF consumption is directly related to fuel consumption. A truck averaging 6 MPG can expect to go approximately 300 miles on one gallon of DEF.

Regardless of what they print I’ve owned Mh with the 450 and two Cornerstones, one with the Cummins 600 and a new one with the 605. Both of the big engines use twice as much DEF. Both the 600s get about the same fuel mileage and if you could use the 2% figure would use close to same DEF. However, I’ve talked to Cummins and their figures are 2-5% DEF usage and while the big engine gets approximately the same fuel economy they pump a lot more air hence the extra DEF usage. That’s Cummins story and they’re sticking to it.

According to Angie from NIRVC, DEF use is approximately one gallon for every fifty gallons of diesel. We have found that to be pretty accurate. We've never tracked it by millage I just fill it every 3-4 times I refuel.

That certainly won’t hold true for the ISX or X15 engines.

Just did a ruff estimate for our 18 Anthem with the 450 "should compare well to your Dutch Star" - looks to be about 400 to 430 miles per gallon of DEF - 51 to 54 gallons of diesel. Normally cruise between 64 to 68.

I am using 2.5- 3 gallons of DEF to 50 Gallons. I have a Freightliner appointment this weekend and will ask them. I just wanted to know if this was within normal usage. Thank you all for responding, safe travels and stay well.

The ISX that I had would use about a gallon every 175 miles. I’ve only got 1400 miles on this X15, but it appears to use about the same.

The 2017 model year engines have significant increases to DEF consumption. It was part of the newer emission system logic. Also they lowered the use of EGR in those same engines. It’s a good trade off. But you can not compare pre 2017 to a newer engine’s use. 5-7% is the new norms, just about double previous use.
