DEF (Diesel Exhaust Fluid) Question

I just finished a 3 week trip to Arizona and California in my 2000 Kountry Star 3565 Diesel Pusher from Colorado.

I came across "DEF" at various truck stops. I have no idea what it is and if I need it...

Thanks!

DEF is "Diesel Exhaust Fluid". You definitely do not need it. The emission requirements changed sometime in the last few years forcing MH manufactures to incorporate DEF into the design of the diesel engines requiring diesel engines to use it. If you google it,myou will find all the technical info on it. You are lucky since your coach predates this requirement.

You don't need it. It's for engine exhaust system designed to meet the 2010 (2011?) EPA mandated emissions requirements. RVs requiring DEF started coming out in 2012 or so.

DEF is Diesel Exhaust Fluid. It is pure urea dissolved in pure water. It is used in conjunction with a Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) unit in Clean Diesel exhaust treatment systems built in the US 2010 and later. It has been in use in Europe since about 2005. DEF is injected in the exhaust system, then hydrolyzes (decomposes) to ammonia in the heat of the exhaust system. The ammonia works with the SCR unit to greatly reduce oxides of nitrogen (NOx) in diesel exhaust.

Your 2000 DP does not use DEF.

As always, please consider us a resource on the for Clean Diesel related questions, especially Diesel Exhaust Fluid.

Thanks for the information.

It's nice to have people on here that work in the industry so we can get the straight skinny on the many issues with RV's.
