Differences between MA and DS

Well, my original thread has raised questions-

http://www.irv2.com/forums/f103/newm...ml#post4917147

So, as I look at units for sale, what are the big differences between the Mountain Aire and the Dutch Star?

I look at a 2012 MA and a 2013 DS and the list of features reads almost the same.

Questions like, does the DS have full extension drawers?

Does the generator on the DS pull out on rails like the MA?

So, I hear the MA is “more” coach, but what is “more”?

BIG difference in appearance and function. The Dutch Star has a conventional roof with visible air conditioners and standard awnings. The MA has the high end roof with Girard awnings and non visible air conditioners. The difference is substantial from that aspect alone.

During that time the roof rails, ac roof drain, and girard awnings where the most noticeable difference.

We contemplated the madp when ordering our 2013 dsdp, but at the time couldn't find a reason to spend $100k more. If it had the 500hp engine or unique and desirable floor plan then maybe.

I see both have the 450, at least in the units I’m looking at.

I know there is a huge difference when buying new, but now 8 years out that delta between prices is almost nonexistent.

The Girard awnings are nice. What is the AC roof drain difference? Never heard of that?

Roof Rails, interior space

I don't know about MA, but our '15 DS has roof rails. Looks nice, but we sacrificed interior cabinet and basement space when we moved from our '08Monaco Diplomat. Be sure to check that out, see if the MA has more space available.
Main decision makers for me were, Newmar reputation, tag ax, easy steer, 450HP.
I LOVE the easy steer, if one unit has that combined with the tag ax that would be a major plus for me if I ever look for a different coach. The 450 Cummins huffs and puffs as hard as the 400 in the Monaco, no major difference there, but the "450 HP" sticker on the back is cool . Side radiator is great, mechanics love it and keeps the dirt out of the coach.
Not sure overall that we really upgraded, but the ride and handling make the other shortfalls livable.

One comment about comparing a Mountain Aire and a Dutch Star of different years; DS upgrades usually follow the MA by a year or two. So, for instance, a 2013 DS may well have many of the things as standard features that a 2012 MA had a year earlier. Newmar seems to add features to their top-of-the-line coaches and then trickle them down in the following year to the next model down.

Something to consider when comparing coaches of different years.

the 2013 MA was still built on the same chassis and same floorplans as the 2013 DS. This changed in 2015, when the MA became a 45ft and joined the other highline coaches in the floorplans.

That is when the engine size increased as well.

Thanks for the responses!

Now, we have been able to look at them basically side by side. Yes, the bells and whistles seem to trickle down a year or two later.

But the look and “feel” of the MA is more what I might call upscale. The thing that made me notice it was the fantastic fan. In the DS it’s a normal fantastic fan, in the MA they have a nice wooden grill covering it.

I guess it’s these things that make it hard for folks to put a finger on the big difference.
