Dometic Extended Warranty

How many of you newer coach owners have purchased the Dometic air conditioner 1-3 year warranty? My inclination is to go with all three a/c units for three additional years, for a total coverage of 5 years. Each unit is $196. Sounds like cheap insurance to me.

That could be a good move. It wasnít long ago that new Dometic units were failing like crazy. I donít know if they got that squared away or not.

I bought two new Penguin II units last year. I did not buy the extended warranty.

You need to read the warranty closely. As I recall, in order for them to honor the warranty, you have to take it to a certified shop. The shop will replace the broken unit and ship it back to Dometic. You have to pay for the new unit and whatever the shop charges. Dometic will look at your broken unit and determine if it is a warranty issue or not. If so, then you will get the price of the new unit back.

Since I installed the units myself and they only cost $1,100 each, the math of taking it to a shop and all the rest did not make sense to me.

I replaced both our A/C units a year of so ago and I elected to buy the 5-year extended warranty. It seems that if these units are gonna fail it's usually shortly after the 3-year factory warranty expires!

So, I took your advice and carefully read Dometics extended warranty. It says only that they will replace parts and repair the unit so long as itís brought to an authorized Dometic facility. Nowhere does it state they will send it back to Dometic to have it assessed. Maybe itís true and you heard it anecdotally, but itís not there in writing.

MShappycampers - The OEM factory warranty is for 2 years, not three. FWIW. - Ron

I just had one replaced that was 2 months out of warranty by Freedom RV in Tucson, at zero cost to me. I think Domectic stepped up on this one.

I bought the 5 year warranty on my 2 Dometic Heat Pump units and glad that I did. Yes you will have to have a certified Dometic technician but that just make the whole process a lot easier and they handle all of the paper work process.

Within the first 5 years, Dometic replaced both of my units 4 time - a total of 8 H/P's - at no charge for either labor or parts.

The extended warranty was worth every penny, but remember that if you do get a replacement, the original warranty time frame remains the same and does not start over.

I purchased the coverage on our three units as one of our units failed within the first three months. It has been worth it as I havenít had a problem since!

You are right that the authorized repair facility will make that determination. If you can't get to an authorized repair facility, the the process is entirely different.

Their warranty, like everyone's, is limited to defects in material and workmanship at the time of sale and under normal use.

There is a lot of wiggle room in that statement.

Both of mine were right at a year old when they died. Both compressors died - they were both setting in a pool of oil. I was not the original purchaser, so the warranty did not apply.

They are essentially built as a consumable product.

"RVRon".....In 2013 and 2014, the Dometic units were failing so fast they could hardly keep up. When we bought new in 2014, made a choice between two Dutch Stars that the dealer had in stock. The only difference was the outside colors. We initially selected an all brown model, but bought the red/black and white unit. The person who bought the brown unit, had both A/C units fail within a few months.

At the time, Dometic was suffering from poorly soldered circuit boards. Since that time, the failure rate has fallen as I think Dometic corrected the issue. You rarely hear about them failing now.

I did have one that didn't work when my 2019 arrived at the dealer. They replaced it and both have been working fine. Personally, I think if they go bad, the odds are it will occur early in the warranty period.....just food for thought.

Dutch Star Don - Thanks for the facts. I did go ahead and buy the extended warranty for a couple of reasons. My Ď15 DS 4369 had 2 of 3 rooftops replaced within 2 years of purchase. I did not have the extended warranty but luckily they were still in warranty.
Since Iím older now, my LA is my last coach (Iíve said that before),
and the 5 years of coverage made sense to me.

Ron, where did you find info on extending the warranty on your Dometic ACs? In years past I was mailed offers but my units are now two years old and I havenít received any offers, yet.

Dometic Extended Warranty

Dan- They sent me the offers to extend in the mail. Each one had the model and serial number of each unit. Since Dometic only sent me 2 of 3, I called them. They resent all three notices within 2 weeks. Try calling and see if they can accommodate you.
800-544-4881. They were easy to work with.- Ron
