Dreaded ball bearing disease-
Well, when I opened the slides last Friday on our last overnight stay in Virginia, there were a bunch of little ball bearings on the living room floor- EEK- . They obviously came from the #4 slide out roller (the rear most roller).
I contacted a Newmar tech on Monday and then the parts guy. I received 4 new rollers and two sets of new brackets in just two days. Great service- . I had to specify what size rollers I had (the diameter), the color of the roller and the shaft geometery- round or hex head shaped and if I had 4 or eight rollers.
Mine are 1 1/2" diameter, gray in color, round shaft and 4 rollers.
Now the fun starts-
I had to fabricate a sturdy table for my floor jack to sit on. Here is what I came up with. This is needed to lift the extended slideout up far enough to get to the rollers. The tech at Newmar told me to extend the slideout about a foot and push on the top of the living room slide, from the inside, and I should be able to jam a piece of 2 x 4 between the floor and the underside on the slide floor- I did that- but I wouldn't have enough space to get the screws out of the brackets. So I decided to tackle the job from the outside.
The long 2 x 4's are to stablize the table between the concrete and grass surfaces I was working on.
I used a 9' piece of 3" x 8" wood to put between the floor jack and the underside of the living room floor.
I had to loosen the weather seal to gain acess to the rollers. This is #3 (from the front). It is okay.
This is the bad roller- #4- Look at the "flared" aft end.
I had to use a #2 square drive bit to remove the screws on the brackets- but alas, It's too long-
So number 2 square drive bit had to be shortened.
Bad roller on the left- New roller on the right.
The aft bracket on #4 roller. I couldn't get to the rear screws so I chose to leave it there.
The length of the rollers.
The damaged end of the #4 roller.
Tools I needed to change the roller, and one of the ball bearings I found lying in the floor pan.
I only changed the broken roller- That was enough for this 'ole boy for one day. I also measured the new rollers shaft diameter and the bracket hole.
The new shaft was .250 thousands and the bracket hole was .278 thousands. It's a loose, sloppy fit with .028 thousands clearance from the get go. I assume this is to facilitate pushing in one end (One end is spring loaded) to remove the roller without removing a bracket. I couldn't do this- maybe because of the damaged mechanism.
Now I wonder why this roller failed??
I always level the rig before extending or retracting the slides- as the owners manual suggests. Maybe the original owner didn't level it before I bought it. I don't know - but I know the new ones are not smooth when you spin the roller on it's shaft. In my humble opinion, Newmar could have done better with a higher quality roller/bearing assembly.
Well this was my experience. $16 for each roller and about $80 for the special table I had to build. I had a quote of 5 to 8 hours labor at $125/hr from a RV repair business.
I now have some spare rollers and brackets.
Good luck if you might have to tackle this job yourself-
Thanks "007" for your prompt answers for me- .

Thanks for the well done write up.
There could be a million reasons that one went bad. Why are the others still good?
Maybe the new guy assembled that one on his first day at the job.

As always another great write up on repairs from the Newmar family.
It doesn't get any better than this with the pictures to boot!
Another one for the memory banks.

Hey Max,
Very nice write up about the repair. The pictures really help.

Nice! Did mine on the inside, built a small ramp and got about 2-3" of space to use a right angled screwdriver type tool.

Max, Your table can now serve possibly other purposes. However, I used a 2X10 under the slide, with a 2X4 cut the right length, and attached to each end. The 2X4's went down to a jack on each end, that sat on the driveway. (one floor jack, one 10 ton bottle jack) Other than that I could depress the spring loaded shaft on mine, and so didn't have to take the brackets loose, I proceeded the same way. Please note, the load is stable, so you do not have to be very concerned about the 2X4's buckling where they are attached to the lumber under the slide. I still had to loosen the weatherstripping as you did.

I think the place that told you it would be 5 to 8 hrs labor either did not want the job or was trying to take advantage of you. I had one roller go bad, got 5 rollers from Newmar, and stopped at Sullivans RV in Decatur, Indiana for installation. They put all 5 in for one hours labor charge. I didn't even break a sweat.

I would second that, doing it myself, and I am slow, took maybe 2 1/2 hrs. (just did one). The major portion of time being getting the slide jacked up, and loosening the weatherstripping.
