Dutch Star Flooring Removal – What’s The Factory Install Method?
I’m jumping in to a few projects on a new-to-me 2005 Dutch Star M4023. I’m owner #3. #1 changed out much of the factory carpet with a bamboo plank. Somebody did a nice job of achieving clean cuts and a tight transition on a radius to tile which runs from the galley into the bathroom areas. I want to finish the job, perhaps updating the tile also. There’s enough leftover bamboo to complete the areas that still have factory carpet. The uninstalled planks have been with the second owner during his three years of custody. I kind of wondered why nobody completed the bedroom and living area slides. After studying details that I had not taken-in until I brought the coach home, I think “degree of difficulty” caused the flooring conversion to stop where it did. Additionally, the installer left a patch of carpet below the driver’s seat. I’d guess the perceived complexity of removing the pedestal base and working around the seat control wiring harness made this carpet island a time-saver. Carpet remains under the dash too …. quite a few tight spots and complex angle changes over a short distance near the pedals and steering column. The bedroom looks like factory flooring was laid wall-to-wall prior to installation of furnishings - really the entire coach has that appearance. Is that indeed the assembly line method, placing interior components on top of already-laid carpet and tile? My one experience with a DIY flooring upgrade (lesser quality brand of RV) was pretty straight-forward because the carpet was trimmed to the edge of each cabinet, wall, bench, etc., and the slide edge was easy to cope with as installed vinyl planks. This job may exceed my self-service skill level (and temperament limits). If I do hire it out, I need to understand all the nuisances of a quality removal and install, so I can competently oversee the project. I am hyper-focused on removing as much carpet as possible due to its capacity as an allergen host. Removing any remnants of a former pet residency is priority #1, since there is a severe allergy concern in the family. Trimming existing carpet at the edge of a cabinet, or the bed pedestal, falls short of my intention. If all furnishings are pinned atop of the factory flooring, it may be impractical or impossible to reach my goal of 100% carpet delete. Just need to understand what I am dealing with.
I’d appreciate any insights on how to remove the maximum amount or original flooring, as well as a steer toward RV flooring educational resources. I have found some good stuff on Youtube, but I haven’t yet taken a deep dive on this forum or similar sites to find some pertinent threads. Thanks in advance.
