E-1 Error on Dometic Thermostat
The wife came in and said the RV air conditioners were off and the thermostat showed E-1. Looked it up and it indicates a loss of communication between thermostat and the roof top unit.
Based on past experience with a Monaco, I had a pretty good idea what to look for and sure enough it was the same issue on my Canyon Star as on my previous Monaco.
For whatever reason, manufacturers think it's appropriate to mount a thermostat on an outside wall. It's a bad idea but I guess it's an easy place to mount it without having to deal with wiring thru the slide. At any rate, as a result, on hot and humid days you end up with condensation on the back of the thermostat. It's cold and dry inside and hot and moist outside. Somewhere in between is the dew (condensation) point.
If the condensation gets heavy enough it causes shorted lands on the circuit board and sends bogus signals to the air conditioner and to the thermostat. If it's not bad enough to cause immediate problems then it eventually causes a lot of corrosion on the circuit board and it will likely need to be replaced.
Since it's nearly impossible to relocate the thermostat after the walls are sealed up, I simply sealed the thermostat wire exit hole and mounted the thermostat on 1/4" standoffs so there is good airflow behind the thermostat. Problem resolved and hopefully won't return. It never did in my Monaco.
Just thought I'd pass on the tip.
