Engine Brake on 2014 Dutch Star

Just checking to see if my coach is set up the same as others. When using the engine brake, set at either high or low and the cruise control is on, the engine brake will activate to keep me at my set cruise speed when going down a hill. This is new to me and I really like it.

When the cruise is off, my engine brake engages the moment I let off of the throttle and disengages when I accelerate. On my previous coach, I had the coast function enabled that allowed me to coast until I engaged the brake with a touch of the brake pedal and disengage with a touch of the throttle. I liked this feature too. Is mine working the same as yours. I would like the coast function, but it may not be available with the cruise function as described in the first paragraph.

Same as mine Don, you will also have the center brake light come on when your Jake engages. Slightly applying the accelerator will usually leave your coach in a coast mode without adding speed.

Don, I only have about 1000mi of experience with my new 400HP ISL in the Ventana but I believe my engine break is operating the same as yours. On my '01 DS I also had the coast function in the form of an aftermarket 'BrakeSwitch' that I installed. I liked that function very much. I just called the inventor of the BrakeSwitch and spoke with him. He has retired from selling his product due to the same function being able to be programmed into the engine ECM of the Cummins engines. That took a lot of his business away. So I guess I will maybe take his advise and shop for a Cummins dealer that will program the engine brake to activate upon depression of the brake pedal and not just the release of the accelerator pedal so I get back the 'coast' we had when tapping the accelerator. Then I leave the engine brake set to either Hi or Lo all the time and do not have to turn it on and off to prevent it downshifting every time you remove your foot from the accelerator. Your thoughts?

Ted,

I love your idea and I am picking up my 400 HP Ventana next month so I very interested in how you make out. When I test drove the Ventana (several times) I loved how the cruise and brake worked together but what you are talking about would make the drive even better if it can be programmed as such. Please post a update when/if you find out more.

That is exactly how mine is operating. This coach is my first experience with an "engine brake" so I wasn't certain what to expect. I do like the fact that the engine brake will work while the cruise control is engaged.

I like that my Jake Brake comes on when I release the throttle as I use it in traffic and town driving. I typically don't use it on interstates unless it's needed or I find myself using it a lot, then I'll just leave it on.
