Engine/transmission temperature variations

RE: 2009 Dutch Aire ISL

On flat ground and at steady speed, I see large temperature swings in both engine and transmission for no apparent reason? Example: driving for an hour at one temp and within 15 minutes it can go up (or down) by a large amount and stay there for hours. By large amount I mean 30 degrees.

Anyone else see this??

outside temps often change as the day changes and altitude changes.
higher up you go, the less efficient heat exchanges become.
mine will maintain temp up to about 90' outside. then it runs hotter.
make note of outside temp and altitude...
Hope this helps.
Dan.

How fast are the temp. swings? Can you just see the gauge's going up and down when they move? The coolant temp.'s don't move all that fast,it should show a slow rise in temp. on the gage while pulling a hill........and the transmission gauge should also rise slowly in reaction to the coolant temperature rise. Just from what you posted.....I wonder if you have a grounding problem making the gauge's move erratically? Espically if both guage's are doing this.

climbing, outside temps, etc. are not a factor

The temperature swings happen over a period of 15 minutes to half an hour. There is NO variation in speed, outside temperature, climbing or going down hill. The temperature change seems to take place with no outside changes of any kind.

If the gauges are actually working properly it sounds like your fan may not be coming on, or the thermostat may be sticking closed. I don't know what chassis you have, or if it's a side or rear radiator. You don't say what the temp ranges are. If it's overheating then you would think the stop engine warning would come on.

Side radiator with a Spartan chassis. It's NOT over heating, just big changes for no reason. The thermostat has been changed without any results.

Hi dougburi,
This has several possibilities possibilities:
1. thermostat (I know, you said it was changed)
2. radiator fan not coming on or off when it is suppose to
3. the gage is defective
4. The wiring to the gage is defective
5. The ECM is not measuring the temp correctly. There are several more reasons for this.

There should be a variation in temp when climbing and descending a hill.

Consider purchasing a ScanGauge D. Go to ScanGaugeD - Advanced J1939 & J1708 compatible Vehicle Monitor for Diesel Pusher Vehicles : Linear Logic and check it out. The ScanGauge D will show you, in real time, the coolant temp measured by the ECM. It will also show you quite a few other measurements of your choice. The ScanGauge D will eliminate several of the above mentioned items.
