Entrance Stair cover for passenger seat

Issue: My stairwell cover for traveling stopped working at the entrance. (Covers the stairwell for the passenger just under their feet while moving) I can use the switch on the dash and hear the motor run only with no movement of the stairway cover moving to come up even with floor inside coach. Step cover is in the down position and not up.
I have looked at how to get access, but see no easy solution for getting behind to see actuator arm and motor. Called Newmar and one service Tech stated to peel off rubber friction molding as a covering for the step. Then, cut away the 5/8" plywood wood step riser to finally observe what the problem might be . Of course plywood would have to be replaced as well the with rubber matting if damaged when peeling off plywood.
Any experience with this issue? I have the 2012 4346 Dutch Star DP.

In QT's # 3 in the stair section troubles are discussed with solutions for motor replacement if necessary and access to under stairs.
Here is one of the threads.
