Erratic Readings Victron BMV 712 Smart

Since Victron provides no customer support – if I had known this I would not have purchased it – I’m hoping someone here can help.

The issue: the monitor (installed March of this year) inside the rig has begun to show erratic readings for the house batteries. It just began to jump all over the place – 11.5 then 13.3 then 12.9 and so on.

I’ve tested the house batteries, all show a steady 13.3 volts. According to my monitor on my Xantrex converter (which is brand new) I have a steady 13.3 volts for my house batteries. The converter itself is putting out a steady 13.3 volts.

In so many words I can find nothing wrong with the batteries themselves.

Just wondering if anyone else has ever encountered this issue with the Victron BMV 712 Smart

Yes, support seems to be an issue, Victron expects their dealers to provide end-user support and some don't or aren't able to.

I assume you've done the obvious things like checking the connections to the shunt (which is also where the battery voltage is sensed) and at the other end of the sense wire to insure a solid connection.

Was the Xantrex inverter installed with the BMV or later? Try removing the fuse to it (or otherwise disabling it) and see if the erratic readings go away. If they do that will be a clue to whomever repairs it.

The BMV has a 5 year warranty and if it isn't a wiring issue it's definitely not working right, so your dealer should repair/exchange it.

Does it ever go higher than the correct voltage? If not, I'd say you have an insufficient connection.
