Escaping escape window!

Looked in the passenger side mirror yesterday only to see my Hehr egress window flopping back and forth.

Fortunately, the bottom the bottom clasps held onto it.

I always thought the window and frame sheet metal intertwined to form a hinge, but this does not seem to be the case.

I noticed there were two slots in the top of the window frame (coach side) and there were two 3/32 blind rivets in the rail attached to the window that apparently go into these slots.

Does anyone know if this is all that holds the window together?

I removed the rivets as I could not get the window to rehang on the frame with them installed. There seems to be only minimal purchase without the rivets.

Tried to take my bathroom egress window off to see how it was put together, but it seemed well fastened and I did not want to break it.

This is NOT an adhesive issue as addressed in a different thread. In my case, the metal parts are securely attached to the window glass.

Thanks 007. As one poster in the referenced thread stated,...
I also have a lot of caulk on the top of the window. Will remove tomorrow and see if I can get the metal parts to re-engage.

Went to fire seminar at a FMCA rally and Mac(The Fire Guy) said before you this rally check your emergency windows to see if they will work. Well on our Essex the front window had a screw that was holding the window from opening and the bedroom window hadn't been opened for a long time and it was stuck to the seal and had to use a big screw driver from the outside to open it. It suggest we all check our emergency windows once a year to make sure they are opening. If you really are brave try to go out one of your emergency windows.

I’m quite sure I couldn’t get out of the emergency window on my Bay Star Sport and I KNOW my wife could not. It is a tiny window above the dresser and below the TV. Fortunately, I can’t see any reason to ever even try. In an actual emergency I would push out or break out the large rear window so we could stand on the bed and swing out holding on to the ladder. My Fleetwood Storm was designed this way and had that big window set up as the exit and I can’t imagine why Newmar did not do the same.

RVers should have an exit plan. If you need it I don't think you'd worry about getting injured on the way out. A broken ankle isn't as bad as burning to death.

One of the reasons we bought a Newmar is because of the escape door in the bathroom. Just open the door, drop the ladder and out you go. Even the window valance and treatments are on latches that allows them to be lifted off and thrown out of the way.

We do have an escape window also but I hope we never have to go out that. It's a long way to the ground.

Not sure why the window came loose, but a huge amount of silicon caulk prevented me from remounting it.

After cutting the caulk away, I could just slide the window back in place along the two interlocking aluminum channels. (Could do this because I drilled out to two pop rivets).

After lining up the pop rivet holes in the outer channel with the slots in the inner channel, I replaced the 3/32 pop rivets so the window cannot slide sideways any longer.

Right now the window seems firmly attached. I guess the problem is solved unless the window tries to escape again.
