Expectation too high?

Ok I’m buying a used 2017 Dutch Star from a Newmar dealer it’s my expectation too high on wanting the engine, transmission, generator and oasis serviced at they expense? It’s that normally done or just reasonable to everything working as it should?

Thanks
Zzotte

Are you still in the negotiating phase, or do you have a purchase agreement in place already. If you are still negotiating, make it part of the purchase agreement. If the deal is done, the dealer is probably not going to do it.

Depends on the dealer. You will ultimately pay for the service. Many dealers do not do chassis or engine work. Make the request.

I have asked that on all three used coaches that we have bought except for the Oasis. I would want to start with a clean slate as far as fluid maintenance. That or negotiate that out of the price and have it done at a shop you are comfortable with or yourself.

I thought that all the services would be done before you pickup the coach and this would customary again I was wrong when I asked I was told “I will check into that” which translate No we not doing it, good thing I have a scheduled apt with Spartan for an inspection at least I know the chassis will be done and I get my local dealer to do the house If they will do it.

I would not expect any dealer to 'volunteer' for that expense.
You may be able to work it in to the deal though.

IMO your expectations are a little high

What you are seeking is probably a $1000 value. If you can get them to do it that would be awesome. If their just going to pass the cost through to you in the sale I'd pass. Ok maybe let them tune up the Oasis but not knowing what dealer your are working with I'd say many dealers don't do great chassis work anyway. My Newmar dealer (Transwest) would be an exception.

If I knew that these service items needed to be done, I would negotiate the best price I could for the unit and take it to a shop I knew and trusted to have the work done. I'd be a bit suspicious that the work would get done well by a dealer that was pressured into doing it. My preference would be to have it done right by someone who knows how and is not doing the work under duress.

You are right on the money, after talking to dealer today, very very reluctant he agreed to service the Generator and Engine “if” they have time “right now we are way too busy” so even if they do it most likely it will be a Half A** job and I would not trusted so I’m taking it to a Spartan dealer as another member mentioned “establish a new base line” thanks for all the help

Used cars, used motorcycles, these types of purchases you can expect a dealer to have already serviced them. Generally speaking it is better for them to put them on the lot for sale after freshly being serviced and it is of course cheap for them to accomplish.

DPs are another story due to the expense involved. If you are thinking about an extended warranty and a complete annual service it is always better to wait until all the numbers are agreed on. Just before you sign on the dotted line throw in those two items to make the deal go through. There is a good chance you will one or both for free.

Sounds like you already made the deal. Don't expect anything after that.
You are wise to have Spartan check the chassis out. I did -after purchase- at their Charlotte MI facility. It's good knowing the coach is up to factory specs. I'm having Spartan at their satellite facility in the Tampa Bay area change the coolant and lube the chassis. I know it will be done right and the price is very competitive.
In any case be careful who you trust working on your rig. The PO of my rig had a prominent dealer in SW FL do a coolant change and other fluid change prior to his purchase. The PO gave me the maintenance order. It appears the dealer ran out of the desired coolant and put whatever else was on the shelf to top it off.

Do you trust the seller to inform you if any deficiencies are discovered during the service?

I would hire a disinterested third party. If I were hiring it done (I do my own).

Well, isn’t there an overriding issue here on a used coach... What do the service records show?? Is the service needed? And if they DON’T have the service records I’d be looking elsewhere...

When I bought my used fifth wheel from a dealer, at the end of the deal the salesman offered a inspection service for a $100 fee. I asked asked the man if that included any repairs to be performed of which he said no, it would just be a list of items needing repair or service. I refused the service but could not help thinking, how convenient for a dealer to get paid to list repairs (maybe even create some) for a captive unfamiliar buyer.
