Failure of Steering Wheel Control Module
I had another "silly" thread title but decided to change the title to help others. So I am behind the wheel for a 6 hour drive and pretty quickly notice that every button on my smart wheel (spartan chassis) is dead. No cruise, no wipers, nothing. While fueling I turned off the salesman switch just to see if it would reset the fault. Didn't work. So, there was no weather on route and I decided I would just get to the destination and deal with the problem. 30 minutes later the horn starts continuously honking and the washer continuously spraying. About 30 seconds later it turned off and I drove faster! Called Spartan emergency line and to their credit they called back. Said to reset the smart wheel controller in fuse compartment. I decided to keep driving instead. Get to the RV park finally with no more events. Then I find out from our home neighbors that in the middle of the previous night the air horn on our coach went off for 30 seconds (with no key in ignition). Pulled the horn fuse for the neighbors at the RV park. In my case, the reset did not work.
What I learned from all of this (along with Mike at Spartan being a huge help) is that there are multiple things that can cause failures like this, but being educated on what can happen in advance (not like me) you can at least have a plan (at a minimum start pulling fuses if the weather is good). If the wheel goes completely out like mine and you have sporadic activation of the features on the steering wheel it is likely the controller and not the clock wheel in the steering column. There are detailed troubleshooting guides, but if it happens to you on the road - Spartan sells many more controllers than clock wheels. It took me about 10 minutes to make the change and I will have cruise for my next 6 hour drive. Hope this helps others and thanks again to Spartan for their customer service!
