Thanks, Radioman, interesting info. We are headed out today and will be going back to the same intersection that caused the first problem, so we will see what happens!

I have not had that occur on my F150, but have had it happen on other toads. It seems that if it gets in a special/unique configuration it will go into a wobble. I've stopped, checked things out, then moved ahead and it disappears.

On my old toad, a Honda CRV, I have had the front wheels get turned the wrong way and stay in that position when attempting to do real sharp turns on a soft surface such as sand. The sand did not have enough grip for the tires to turn back in the right direction after the turn. On a sharp turn, the toad wheels will first turn the opposite direction you are turning because of the coach tail swing and then finally turn the correct direction once the tail swing is complete-ever notice it looks like your wheels are trying to peel the tires off the rims at the beginning of a real sharp turn. It could be the turn over the RR tracks created a unique traction situation that may be hard to repeat. When this happened with the CRV on soft terrain, I had to get in the toad and manually turn the steering wheel back in the right direction-it was just dragging the car across the sand with the wheels turned full lock and would not straighten itself out.

I have had the same issue with my 2016 F150 4wd. It happens at the same spot when exiting my RV park in Port Aransas, TX. I prevented it by waiting until I lined up straight before hard acceleration. Once it starts the only thing ti do is slow or stop then start again.

Is this a 4x4? Are you placing it in flat tow mode so you see the message on the dash?

2016 F150 Supercrew FX4 here. No problems like that in probably 30K miles being towed. Or at least I have never noticed it.
(We occasionally get a brake warning message which goes away on startup, and have once or twice had a battery charge message - I think I left it in ACC position then)

Thanks, UMXHAULER, good to know. I was previously towing a CRV and never had that issue, but I never pulled it through soft terrain either. The CRV was easy to set up and great to tow!

Thanks, Randyjam, I am chalking up my experience to that specific set of circumstances I had, as well. For future potential situations like that, I will do what you do in terms of straightening out before accelerating. We drove about 900 miles over the last 3 days and didn't have the issue again, so agree that it was a pretty unique set of circumstances.

Thanks for your response, George. It is a 4x4 and I do place it in Neutral Tow Mode in accordance with the owner's manual procedure. All of the messages and sounds are normal and indicate the setup is correct. I haven't had any other issues with towing it and the same thing hasn't happened again after about 1000 miles, so I think as others have said that it was that unique set of circumstances that caused the wobble.

I was making a right turn at about 15 mph which required crossing a raised railroad track, so the coach was braking, turning and leaning to the left. When I straightened out of the turn and started to accelerate, the F150 starting oscillating left and right similar to how I've heard the "death wobble" described. I stopped and went out to inspect and there were no issues with the coach, tow bar or F150. I started out again and didn't have any issues the rest of the trip.

Has anyone else experienced this or does anyone have any ideas? I know that previous Super Duties had potential steering linkage issues that caused a wobble when towing a trailer, but didn't find anything about F150s being flat towed.

Thanks,

Mike

We have a 2020 Expedition which I assume is similar to your F-150. This has happened to us now 3X in 28,000 miles all at low speed when making a turn after a stop or near stop. The solution each time was to stop and start again and the wobble goes away. I’m now more mindful of it happening after a slow turn, but I don’t worry about it. Good luck.

Thanks, Shawn, I think I'm in the same boat in terms of being aware it could happen under certain circumstances and trying to minimize them when possible.

I tow a Ford C-Max and have had that to happen numerous times when making relatively sharp turns above 10 mph. It seems that the toad steering angle does not turn quickly enough and the front tires begin what I call a crow hop. The only cure is to slow and straighten.

The way to eliminate this problem is to disconnect the battery in order to disengage the electronic steering. The electronic steering is searching fro center when this happens. It is a known Ford Problem. We thought it only happened on slow turns with elevation shifts. We found out the hard way it can happen at 60 miles an hour on a lane shift. Not fun.
