Freightliner - Amazing service and support

Yesterday we left Glacier NP to head home. About 200 miles from Billings, MT my DW took over the driving duties so I could enjoy being a passenger.

She was behind the wheel for less than 30 minutes and the temp alarm went off. I told her to drop the gear as we where climbing and I assumed she was lugging.

After 10 seconds it was obvious that was not the issue, so she let off the power, and dramatically slowed speed. This let the temps drop to 223, which is about 15 higher than my prior highest temp. We got to a safe place and I went outside to listen to the engine.

What I observed was a much quieter engine than usual, and visual confirmation of the fan showed it was not running high speed.

I was aware of a wire that could be disconnected to change fan speed, but wasn't clear on details, so I called FL and within 2 minutes was talking with an expert.

He told me that 0v to the fan clutch causes it to lock high, 12v unlocks 100% and in between is varying lock for ramp up.

There are 2 ways to cause 0v. The first is to remove the fuse. Sadly, my one fuse bank was not labeled, so he had to guide me by counting off fuses.

Removing the fuse did not change speed.

The second method is to disconnect the wire to the clutch. I did this and still no success.

Diagnosis: bad fan clutch

Next the FL rep looked up the part and located it for me in Billings. He had it held for me and I limped my way in.

My plan was to change it myself, but I discovered later that night I didn't have the tools for the job.

Saturday morning at 7am I arrived at the FL shop in Billings. The service writer was able to get me in, and by 11am I was back on the road.

It is great to have such great support, with no Hassle, and so many options for parts and service.

After 52000 miles, this was the first time I needed emergency support for my 2013 Dutchstar chassis. It was handled so professionally, and quickly that I am glad that I ordered my 2019 with a Freightliner.

I just used a Freightliner Service Center to get the first service done on my Cummins/Onan generator. You couldn't ask for a nicer, friendlier, more professional place. They did the complete service while I waited for $195. After talking to them about prices for getting my initial service done on the engine/chassis I will be tweaking my travel plans so that we are coming back through Morton Illinois and having it done here.

We are thrilled with Freightliner quality and support so far.
