Fresh Water Pump Life Span
Recently while boonedocking, the fresh water pump would turn on momentarily and turn off just as quickly in the middle of the night when no water was in use. My thoughts turned to cause and effect. The only way the pump would turn on is if the waterline is loosing pressure. The only way for the waterline to lose pressure is if it is leaking water somewhere. This morning I checked waterlines in the coach, cargo bays, overflow duckbill, and wet bay. Well, the problem was in the wet bay. The bottom of the water pump faceplate was seeping water every time the pump was activated. I tried tightening the 8 faceplate screws on the bottom of the pump hoping it would seal the leak. It didn't work.
Eventually I replaced it with a new pump from my spare parts inventory. Thinking I can salvage and repurpose the old pump by replacing the head gasket, I took the faceplate off to see if the gasket can be replaced. The pump diaphragm screws broke loose from the screw housing and got chopped to pieces. There is no salvaging the pump. It's toast. It had metal shavings under the diaphragm. Just hoping it didn't get into the water delivery line.
We took delivery of the coach in May of 2022. So it's been about 2 years and 6 months. We don't do a whole lot of dry camping. But we do use the fresh water pump off and on even when we're hooked up to water.
Does anyone know of a better quality water pump that will hold up a bit longer?
