Generator Hood Hard to Open

Purchased a 2016 Ventana LE from a private seller about three weeks ago. I found the generator hood hard to open by myself. I would pull the "T" handle and the hood latch would catch again as soon as I let go. . Took two people to open....one to pull the T handle and the other to pull the hood out just a little. Had an idea how to fix it and found what I need in my shop and this is what I came up with. Now when I pull the latching handle the hood pops open about an inch and I can easily open it by myself.
Next project is to put gas struts on it. Think I saw a post where someone had done so.

Looks like a good fix! We had the same issue with the Canyon Star hood and this fix would work with that model also.

It may be worth a look at the latch. I had a similar struggle with my '09 Dutch Star and found that cleaning off accumulated road gunk on the mechanism and some WD40 freed it up nicely. Happy travels!

Yeah Steve mine is the same way. I have a part that I wedge the handle to keep it "open". Spring makes sense, I just hadn't got around to it.

Where did you source the springs?

Don't do the gas struts, I did and it almost pushed the hood off the hinges and made the hood stick out past the body, took them back off and replaced all the hinge screws with larger size 10s.

Good idea. You might want to cover the end of the spring with something like a rubber cap to prevent the spring from eating through the fiberglass.

I have same problem with our 2019 Ventana LE. I met another 2020 Newmar DS owner who said that NOW Newmar put in gas shocks at the factory.

If DW isn’t around, I take a small vise grip and pull the release, then clamp it on the rod to hold it in the “pulled” position. Then go around front and open the hood. My beef is the prop rod won’t stay in the little spring clamp. It pops loose On a rough highway and bangs around. I twisted a piece of wire around it all to hold the rod better.

I’d be interested in knowing what source OP used for the spring.

Two things.....use a clothespin instead of the visegrips so you don't ruin the rod. Second, the springs are called conical compression springs. They come on a lot of cars, Napa or Auto Zone may have generic ones.

I found the spring and the rubber mount is my spare parts/junk bin. Not sure what they came from. I'm the type that doesn't throw this kind of stuff away. Never know when an item could be used for something.

I have found several springs but not a mount that is suitable. Or I can find a spring with mount that is way too heavy duty. If someone finds a source please post it please!

If you can, just insert a fender washer over the large end of the spring and drive a self tapping screw through the fender washer hole and into the body.

I took a fender washer slightly larger than the spring diameter and trimmed the edges to make it more oblong. I cut a small notch in one edge and and fastened with a small screw and nylock nut. Works like a dream. My spring was not conical as I couldn't find one but this worked great. Found it at Ace hardware.
