Girard Awnings
So I have been studying the Girard awnings on other Newmar coaches and I'm wondering if we are missing a part or if we have a different model. The awning billows so much in even the slightest breeze that we almost never use it. I see other awnings have a crossbar down the middle that seems to anchor it to the extension arms and also allow for it to be "bent" downward. We do not have that crossbar. What am I missing? Or more to the point, what is my awning missing? Is this some additional part that we need to install?
We have a 2017 DS 4018.

Girard Awnings
What year and model is your coach? Do you have the optional Nova awnings? They are the only Girard with the bend down and bar you are talking about. They are not the standard Girard awnings on most Newmars, but rather an optional upgrade.

It does not appear that we have the Nova awning. Our original work order specifies G2000, which I see on the Girard website is "the original" awning. Well, that answers my question. I wonder if there is something that can be done to modify the one we have so that it does not billow so much. I don't care so much about the different pitches (although it would be nice), but anchoring that wide piece of canvas would be very helpful.

I've had both style of awnings, and I'm not convinced the Nova bend actually improves billowing, or at least overall wind sensitivity.
When there's enough wind to make them billow, it's time for them to go in anyway. (Not that I'm thrilled about that either, but...)

We also have the Nova awnings on our LA. They are for shade and light rain. With just the right angle of wind gusts or strong breezes they are highly effected. So only in perfect conditions are they utilized.
A little older Prevost was parked across from us, he had the straight out awnings, but with no slide outs on passenger side they were pitched way down and he could handle more wind or so it seemed!

The billowing could be caused by the motor of the awning extending the fabric out too far thus allowing the fabric to become loose. If so this is an adjustment that can be done by a dealer.

The short answer is that the horizontal arm style awning (like a G2000) is prone to billowing and filling with water. There is nothing you can do. Be vigilant. We use ours only when we are sitting under it and have the remote within our reach. PITA ...
