Height Question - Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel

I have a 2019 Dutch Star 4018. I was told that its height is 13' 1''. I am pretty leery about bridge heights and generally avoid anything less than 14'. But avoiding the 13' 6" tunnel to my next destination would cause an extra 250 miles to be added to my trip. Simple question. Have any of you with Newmar models similar to mine traveled the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel between Little Creek/Norfolk Virginia and the Eastern Shore of Virginia. If so, are there any hassles I need to worry about?

I would definitely measure the height myself, not counting on anything or anyone else to tell me what my height is. My answer is about safety.

The last time I went through the Bridge Tunnel I was in a 40' Tiffin. The height of the tunnel was not a problem, it was the narrow lanes inside the tunnel. Mirrors on oncoming trucks are way too close for me to do it again.

13’ 1” applies if you have the in motion sat antenna. Without that, mine is 12’ 8” with the highest point being the top of the OTA antenna.

I went through there last year with my 2004 MA, no problem. When I had it weighed at an Escapees location, they also measure the height. It measured 12'4".

Also been thru there several times including at night during an electrical storm. Only issue is the am/fm antenna on the MH is over 14 feet. It dragged on the ceiling of the tunnels.

The only way to know the height of your RV is to get it on level ground and with a helper. measure the actual height of your RV. The brochure data cannot be trusted.

Have you added vent covers, antennas, or changed tire sizes from stock or anything to the roof?

Our actual loaded height on our 5er when hooked to the truck is 13'-4" which is more than the brochure shows and it is the forward vent cover that adds the height.

My 2020 London Aire fits very nicely thru that tunnel. I have done it many many times with our Dutch Star and London Aire. I have used the parking lot on the north side of the bridge several times for overnight camping without any issues. Keep both hands on the wheel when other big rigs are coming at you in the tunnel. Lastly enjoy the view its a beautiful drive.

FYI: They have sensors that read vehicle height, they will flag you down if over.

The roadway width is 24 ft throughout. That’s a 12 ft travel lane, same as you get on the Interstates and most US Highways.
