Hide-A-Bed vs Fold-And-Tumble

Can anyone tell me what the differences are between the Hide-A-Bed and the Fold-And-Tumble sofa beds? Both are listed at 74 inches on the coaches we are considering.

Having had both:

Hide-A-Bed's have a pull out from under the cushions frame/mattress, providing the sleep surface.

Fold-N-Tumble's the couch back pivots (i.e. "tumbles") forward past the seat, then lays flat next to the couch seat, providing the sleep surface.

I never found the FNT confortable at all because of the seam between the seat & folded-down back. I'd always have to put a foam topper on it.

Depending on the support/mattress on the HAB, those can be quite comfortable.

I don't know the specifics with those names, but there are differences with RV fold-away beds. In general,

- Some have a thin uncomfortable mattress permanently installed.

- Some have a thick memory foam mattress permanently installed.

- Some use an inflatable air mattress.

- Some have a storage drawer underneath, some don't.

- Some have a very annoying metal support bar that rests painfully across your spine, regardless of which direction you lay on the bed.

Thanks for the quick reply. This may be the only model Newmar offers this type of bed. I think the reason is the opposing dinette. Now I've learned a new term, there is another "Easy Bed" term I need to learn. Anybody know how an "Easy Bed" works? It comes on a Ventana 4375.

I had heard the terms JackKnife which is basically a bi-fold, the lower cushions come out and the back folds down, so you have a bed twice the width of the seat cusions and the length of the couch's width.


The Fold and Tumble I think is more like a classic sofa bed, so it's three sections, and the Easy Bed that came in our BSS has an inflatable matress on top, so it's a full queen size bed, as a Jack Knife it would've been too small for anyone over about 5 foot to sleep on comfortably.

Gary - An Easy Bed is found in several Winnebago RV's (they call them "Rest Easy"). Those couches recline (the same way a La-Z-Boy does with a footrest coming out), but they recline nearly completely flat to make the sleeping area. From what I can tell, I wouldn't think these would be any more comfortable than the FNT because of the space between the cushions. They'd probably need some sort of topper to make them comfortable.

Of course, if guest accommodations are too comfortable, they won't leave.

We have a jack-knife sofa on our MADP (you pull out on the lower cushion of the couch and the backrest folds flat so, combined, they make the sleep area) which is VERY uncomfortable for sleeping. Not sure how "Fold-n-Tumble" compares, but I would assume it's something similar.

If it's an option... consider any form of guest bed that has an air mattress. Slept on a Hide-a-Bed with Air Mattress in a friend's Kountry Star and found it to be infinitely more comfortable than ours.

We had a jack-knife style sofa bed on our DP Holiday Rambler and our son had to sleep on it for a month during our cross country trip. We were constantly told how incredibly uncomfortable it was (over and over again). We now have the pull out sofa in our 2015 Bay Star. It pulls out like a regular house sofa sleeper to form a queen size bed (we just made it up and regular queen size sheets and mattress pad fit it perfectly). Plus the 'support bar' no longer is right at your back level, its down at knee level so it won't hit the sleeper in the back like in the old versions. No one has slept on it yet, but trying it out, it seems to be really comfortable. Oh, ours is not an air mattress, but a regular inner spring type mattress.
