Hitch Broke

I was on i10 in New Orleans late this afternoon. I saw a London aire with a matching three axel stacker trailer with what looked like a broken hitch. The trailer was up against the back of the RV. Any one else saw this?

Stacker trailers tend to run higher than normal tonque weight. I have a london Aire and a stacker. I am changing our my hitch so that the weight is not a problem. I am betting this may have been the problem with the LA you saw today.

Hitch broke

Forgive my ignorance but what do people carry in these 15,000 lb loaded stackers? Multiple cars?

2015 Newmar Ventana 4037 (on order)
2012 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Rubicon TOAD
Any number and combination of toys/equipment. Race or show car(s), motorcycle(s), ATV/UTV/Golf Cart(s), boat(s), TOAD(s) in combination with toys, all types of equipment and cooking gear... just to mention a few possibilities.

Sorry for crashing the Newmar's owner page but the headline got my attention as I also tow a stacker at times.

I've pulled some heavy trailers with my mh's but I always went overkill on the hitch.

Here is something many overlook with hitches.. now we all know the need for the hitch to be at the proper height, else if towing a trailer the back (or front) of the trailer may drag the ground and if towing 4 down, bad things happen when you hit the brakes (There is a story about that around here somewhere)

So we use drop/rise adapters to level out the hitch points.

The receiver on the Motor home is NOT designed for TORSION loads It is designed for straight pull but when you put one of these drop/rise adapters on it you torque it big time (Twist in case you wonder) and that brakes the cross bar to frame brackets and/or welds not designed for a torsion load.. Thankfully when that happened to me a passing motorist called my attention to it and the secondary damage was only 80 bucks (new wheel for bicycle that also rides on the hitch) .

You are right. Extensions and drop hitches are reducing the max tong weight of the hitch
