The air filter form my Cummins 5.9 24 valve is around $100. It's worth it to me to change it annually. It's easy to change and I don't need another huge engine repair bill if I can avoid it. As for the gen set, the air filter gets changed with the routine oil, oil filter service. Right at 5,000 hours on the gen set and continues to run without a hitch.

NEVER blow out a diesel filter and reinstall. I poster last week said he blew his filthy Onan filter out and then put it back. You'll contaminate the clean side and ruin an engine.

Don, when you change the engine air filter do you find it easier to leave the large rubber hose connected to the engine, or remove it with the filter? It looks like there is only 2-3 inch space to lift the filter off the engine so didn't know which way was the best, or easiest.

Just got my annual service done on my Discovery. I got 3 quotes. One from Cummins Power South, one from Freightliner and one from an independent shop that was recommended to me. They all said the same thing, every 2 years on the engine air filter, unless the indicator shhows it should be replaced sooner.

Tried Speedco this year for the annual maintenance. Unfortunately, not all Speedcos are the same. They did not have an air filter nor were they interested in ordering one for me. Seems the one in Oregon is geared towards truckers mostly. So, I call Cummins locally and I'm having one shipped to me. Question is, do I want to do this myself? No, if Speedco could have done it. Yes, maybe, if I don't have to go back to another repair/service shop this year

Is there any place in particular that is best, or even good, to order the air filters for the 8.9 Cummins engines?

Just do a Google search for the Fleetguard filter number. I bought mine from https://puredieselpower.com for my ISL. I usually check prices from several shops before I order.

Air filters and tires are not like fine wine--they do not improve with age. Yup--you might could save a few bucks on the internet but make sure you are not getting a "well aged" filter out of somebody's dusty old shelf stock........

And here is a nice link to a DIY blog for replacing a filter like the one in the photos above.

Part # in last photo. 62891-001. It does not look easy but I'll give it a shot.

I wander if K&N makes these filters? They are washable and reusable. No paper.

We have a 04 Essex with a 500 ISM and in 2006 we put a AFE air filter because at that time K&N wasn't making them. AFE is just like a K&N and was started by K&N people. That was 125K miles a go with trips to Alaska and most states in US. There will be a lot of of negative talk about K&N but with paper filters coving a part and cost they are the way t go. One always has to watch the rubber hoses and clamps.

K&N does for my ISC and they are washable. Also read a review from another ISC owner that it upped the performance and squeaked out a little better fuel mileage. Just replaced mine, but will look into a K&N next time...
Cheers,
Don
