How to bring in slides manually?

Batteries dead and no access to power to bring in the small bedroom slide. We need to retract the slide in order to get the battery tray out and replace all the batteries. We have an 06 KSDP 3910

I'd call Newmar in the morning and ask them how to manually bring in the slide. There is a way to jump the motor as well as manually turn a bolt on the motor casing itself to retract the slide. They can walk you through it.

You need to loosen the 1 1/2 trans torque nut which has left handed threads enough that you can then much the slide in by hand. You can also use a power pack and using the red and black wires coming off of motor put the positive and negative cables to the slide out motor wires. Might have to switch wires back around to get the slide to go in. This way you don't have to loosen large nut.

You can disconnect the two wire electrical connecter from your slide motor and "jump" the slide by running 12 V power to the motor using your car battery.
OR
you can disconnect the two wire electrical connecter from your slide motor and manually crank the slide in using a 1/2 inch socket racket. As you are looking at the motor, there is only one place where a racket will fit. Note: the only reason you need to electrically disconnect the motor is because the motor acts as a "brake" if left connected.

Whichever option you use, be sure to reconnect the the electrical connector after the slide is in.

So, to retract a two motor slide would you need two battery's and two people simultaneously energizing each motor?

While I haven't looked at a new Newmar recently (or many older ones), those I have seen though in the past have an emergency start switch and if yours has that then what I would do is this.

1) Start the big engine, leave it running for 5~10 minutes before moving to the next step (keep it running during all steps).
2) Turn on or hold in the "Emergency engine start switch" for at least 5~10 minutes.
3) While holding the Emergency start switch in, have a partner start the generator (or you especially if you have a generator start switch on the dash.
4) Run the generator for ~30 minutes.
5) Bring the slides in while the generator is running.

Can you do all of this with a Newmar? I suspect so, but perhaps you or others know of a reason why you can't.

Best Luck, ~CA

I have only tried that on a single motor slide.

For those with a full wall slide, you may have found a pair of threaded rods about 24" long in your coach. At both ends of the full wall slide there is a wood trim piece at the bottom (molding) that is attached with magnets. Remove both pieces, insert the threaded rods and start cranking on each, moving back and forth, to retract the slide.

On the twin motor units, like my kitchen slide, if the motor were broken (tooth), it's pretty easy to just remove the motors. I think then a couple of people could it in.

If you ever have to remove one of the twin motors, they mounted to a square welded housing that has four bolts that are easier to remove, then the motor bolts. So...remove the housing and motor as one unit, then remove the motor.
