How To: Change Out DEF Filter

Oaky, there were a couple of posts stating the DEF filter needed to be changed at 200K miles or three years. Many said they had theirs changed and even included the part number. After reading through the entire thread, I didn't see it pointed out where the filter was located.

Well....today I changed mine and here are a couple of photos and how I did it. First, on my Dutch Star, it's attached to the back of the DEF tank housing at the bottom. If you look under the coach, you can easily see the cap to the filter. In this photo, the left side is the outer edge of the coach and you're looking up from the ground at the DEF filter on the right side of the photo. The cap is the round knurled part in the center.

If you decide to change it yourself, take some 409 or other spray cleaner and thoroughly spray the cap and then rinse with a hose. Since the cap points downward, dirt and road grime collects in the threads. This will make removal and installation easier and cleaner.

I tried to remove the cap with my hand, but it was too tight. I took a pair of Channel Locks and gently turned it until I got it loose. I removed the cap which reveals a rubber plug/seal, that will fall out. It's about 3" long. Less than an ounce of DEF came out and was caught in a rag. The new filter kit includes the filter, the rubber plug/seal and a removal tool. Here is a photo of the filter kit. The kit is part #530364.

The included tool is suppose to reach into the filter and pull it down. My filter wouldn't come out using the tool. I grabbed the edge of the old filter with pliers and pulled it out. I cleaned the threads of the filter housing and cap with some 409 so that the cap would screw on easily. I inserted the new filter, rubber plug/seal, lubricated the threads of the cap with some WD40 and reinstalled the cap. The WD40 won't affect the filter because the threads of the cap are separated by the rubber seal.

Pretty easy job and can be done with the coach air downed.

Don, Great write up. Where did you purchase the filter kit? Is that a Freightliner or Cummings part number?

Great information Don. Thanks. I installed a dust shield the other day and was looking for the Def filter so I know where it is when I have to change mine, you confirmed it for me.

I just plugged in the words (DEF FILTER #530364) and did a search. You'll come up with several companies. I found both Hengst and Fleetguard. I bought from the company with the cheapest price on Fleetguard.

Here is one here...https://www.ebay.com/p/cummins-def-p...d=252851811922

I changed mine last week, first time since new (Jan 2013). It looked dirty compared to the new. As Don said, the tool was very hard to use, but I think the instructions could have been more clear.

The instructions state to match the color, and push in until you hear a click. I was assuming this tool was a key to unlock something up high. After about 5 minutes of fussing with it, I looked at the new one, and discovered that there is no magic key, just using the tool as a way to pry on the lip. Pushing in involves catching the lip closest to the ground with the tool, holding the tool at an angle to keep pressure on the lip, and pulling down.

Once I got the angles right, it came out pretty easy. Next time I will use pliers, as they are much easier to use.

Good info and it looks like a pretty easy maintenance chore that I'll probably do when I get back home.
Just wondering, I take our DS to Gaffney each year for it's annual maintenance and they have not changed the DEF filter. Seems like if it was needed at a shorter interval due to time vs mileage, that they would jump on that to generate a few extra $$'s

Is it three years or two?

My CF manual says two years.

The time frames I read were three or 200K. Since none of us will do 200K in three years, the three years wins. With that said, I don't think this is a hugely critical filter and four years would probably be fine.

Excellent information showing how easy it is to do maintenance by yourself.

Thank you!

Doing a Google search I found on Amazon 3 different filter numbers.
The 5303604 Cummins OEM listed above for $79.99.
W74B191 Wix for $66.84.
1457436033 Bosh for $34.99.

Are all DEF filters the same and will fit any DEF tank? Will any of the above numbers fit my 2015 Dutch Star with 450 HP Cummins?

First let me say it never hurts to change a filter. I was concerned when Freightliner said it should be changed every 2 years or 200,000 miles. I talked with Cummins (it is actually a Cummins part) and was told they considered the interval to be 200,000 miles period. I decided that I will change mine this coming spring when we will have owned the coach 4 years.
