How to estimate battery reserve

Is it possible to estimate battery capacity or reserve in hours?
Thanks

Dougc231-

Two concepts to understand are "energy audit" and "battery monitor." The energy audit is an estimate of the way you use 12V power in your RV. The battery monitor tells you how full the battery is. Between the two you can determine the expected run time.

Here is a link to a Web page on energy auditing:

The 12volt Side of Life Part 2

Here are links to battery monitors, such as the Trimetric 2030, the Magnum BMK or the Xantrex LinkPRO.

You can go the full route with a battery monitoring system, and a complete understanding of your unit's energy usage behavior. I have a solar system and the Magnum battery monitoring unit, but I think that's not where you want to start. At the simplest is to get as accurate a picture as you can of what your battery voltage versus state of charge looks like. You can get that from the battery manufacturer or elsewhere. As a rule of thumb you should never go below about 50% state of charge, which corresponds to about 12-12.2 volts. Then, I would recommend starting with a full charge and watching the voltage level as you normally use your coach, and measure for yourself how many hours you have before you hit that level. If you've found the chart for your state of charge versus battery voltage, then combined with this simple exercise you'll get a fairly decent picture. You could try a few different tests with different appliances and systems turned on, and then move to finding out how much you use with each system.
