How to locate an exhaust leak

Our 2003 Dutchstar 3802 with a Cat e-3126 engine (117K miles) has exhaust smell coming into the rear bedroom. I have checked and update all of the seals and the cross engine flexible pipe has been replaced. I agree with the thought that if exhaust can be smelled in the coach then it is not only going out the tail pipe. I have heard of opening up the covers and running the engine at 1500-2000 rpm, but how do I find the exact point on leakage. Can I spray water or something on the exhaust system (until it gets hot). As always appreciate any help.

I would think you would be able to see black soot streaks where the exhaust gas is leaking out of the exhaust system

Look for the black soot. Depending on the size of the leak, you can take a piece of tubing, like 3/8", and stick one end in your ear and use the other to fish around the areas where you think you have a leak. If there is enough hot gas escaping, it will blow into the tube and you'll hear it.
