I40 was so rough two HVAC knobs sheared off

Was traveling down I40 near Nashville, on the way to NIRVC, and I'm not sure which of the bad bumps did it, but at one point I notice light coming from the dash and look down and both the fan control and temp control knobs are laying on the charging pad. Both of them had the plastic in the back broken.

There were a few really hard bumps. One of the two multiplex switches over the bed was also hanging loose.

It's hard for me to believe that these knobs broke. The only thing I can think is that the unit on the inside of the dash bounced and that created the stress to break off the knobs.

Hoping nothing else was damaged in the coach.

I can empathize with you. I was on I-40 going across AZ towards Flagstaff and the road was so bad I thought when I stopped I’d see cabinets hanging off the wall. It was so littered with potholes that we took an entirely different (southern) route home to CO. It took an hour longer, but it was worth it. I think that section of I-40 probably took a few years off my coach!

I-40 is rough, but we will assure you a smooth ride through our service department. Looking forward to seeing you Monday morning.

Be careful on I 80 from Indiana Border to Joilet Illinois.
It the worst most dangerous road for any RV.
It will ruin your suspension, cause a flat tire, or get you into an accident.
Here is my bypass I take every time. It’s safe, no anxiety.
Adds a hour to the trip, about 50 miles

Was through that section in 2019 and it seemed good then, but it doesn't take long for roads to deteriorate. That same year I found I70 in Ohio an absolute disaster.

Last fall it was both Ft Worth & Dallas and I35 in general in Texas. How can a highway dept cut out a big pothole and not refill the foot deep cut square hole they made in the middle of an interstate? Never saw that one before but I'm pretty sure it took several years of life off my tires. Tons of road gators and other obstacles as well.

Always seems to be plenty of Interstate highways that require a lot of TLC. I'm sure "Build Back Better" will soon have all of them fixed up for us! ;-)

Staring at the service department door waiting for 8am to come and find out if you have a couple Evans Tempcon knobs. Lol

As I was hitting those bumps, I was like, "on the way to get my Rettrobands, I'm going to have a blowout from pot holes..."

Tough to hear I40 has gotten that bad. Travelled it routinely for work many years ago, but have not been through there recently.

Was that section on the east side of Nashville toward NIRVC’s new place, or between Memphis and Nashville. I may have travel part of I40 East of Nashville in next few days.

Thanks!

Between Memphis and Nashville. It was bad most of the way, with the wife multiple times saying, "I thought Arkansas roads were bad," but the closer we got to Nashville, the worst it got.

We had one MAJOR bouncing event about two hours short of Nashville, and the series of hard jolts, one of which broke the knobs (still trying to get my head around how that happened), was probably just before or after the I40 cross the 840 loop (best guess).

It's been a decade or two, but I used to travel Memphis to Nashville by car, or all the away across the state, fairly regularly, and back in the day, it was a great road.

Thanks for the info. We traveled some of 40 on East Side of Memphis last year - from around Jackson to Memphis - and remember it being rough. Glad to hear east of Nashville is ok.

Hope you have a good trip back - maybe Westbound lanes will be better.

Safe travels,

Safe travels,
Hope the westbound is better. My sister was traveling behind me in their Phaeton, and every time she watched my coach get slammed around, she would quickly slow down and said if she slowed to 55 or so, it wasn't nearly as violent as it was for me.

tnedator,
I live about 20 miles southeast of Nashville.

I-840 bypass around south side of Nashville takes you to 1 exit west of the exit for NIRVC. I miss them being at their original location in LaVergne about 10 miles from my house.

We have come from Dyersburg, TN on US-412 getting on I-40 eastbound at Jackson. Is the construction still going on on I-40 at Jackson?
One of the roughest roads ever.

Leaving in the morning from NIRVC, and my brother in law agreed earlier when discussing that the extra 20 miles of the 840 loop was the way to go. We drove into Nashville today around the time we will be heading home tomorrow, and had no desire to drive through that traffic in our RVs, not to mention, hopefully missing some of the bad road.

I had never been in the old NIRVC (my first visit to any NIRVC, actually), but did pass by it, because we spent the weekend at Four Corners, before heading to NIRVC Sunday night for Service Mon/Tue.

It is amazing how many bad roads there are right now. Millions being spent on 'new' and widening road projects. I wish they'd repair/repave the existing roads first.

On a positive side, Wisconsin has been doing a major rebuilding of the I39/I90 corridor. Multiple years project. We go through there on our way to the Twin Cities or to Duluth. Didn’t go through there last year, so in July, I’m interested in seeing if they are done or close to being done.
