Idling Question

Have brand new Dutch Star and it will not idle below 1200rpm. My question is this a freightliner problem or a Cummins problem? The cruise control is off. Thanks, Bill

Could be in either system, impossible to say until diagnosis is done. You don’t know if the chassis is not giving proper zero throttle input or of the engine has a problem. I would start at a FLCC shop as most are also authorized Cummins shops.

Is your allison trans shifting into gear at 1200 rpm?

Mine won't if rpms are over 800 so if it does I would suspect the rpm gauge is not registering properly.

It is not a problem. It is a feature. Believe it? The idle is set to go that high when the dash air is on and the transmission is in neutral and the park brake is engaged. Turn the dash A/C off before putting the transmission in neutral and the idle should settle in at 800. Let me know if this works for you

This issue has come up several times before. Always check that your A/C switch is OFF before starting the engine.

Sorry I should have said that I had tried turning the dash air off with no change. This is my 4th cummins and 3rd Freightliner and have never had one idle this high unless I turned the cruise control on. Bill

Mine has a hidden idle adjust switch under the dash maybe it got pressed by accident?

Did it ever idle properly or suddenly went up?

Update; Talked to Freightliner and they looked up my Vin# and said that it should only idle this high under a low voltage or regen situation. I asked if I should take this to cummins or freightliner and they said it should go to freightliner. Looks like a service call is in my future. Thanks for the replies. Bill
