Infrared gun for tire temps

Any suggestions on what infrared
gun to order for testing tire temperatures?
Looks like the run anywhere from
$14.99 to 100.00?
Thanks

I forgot the name of mine but I bought it at Sams Club and it has worked great. I also works great on ac systems as well.

I have a mid-line Fluke. By mid-line I mean it's not the bottom of the line or the top of the line.

I got this particular one because 1) Fluke is a good trusted brand, and 2) because my particular model has two L.E.D. lights that indicate the meter's target area. The two lights indicate the diameter of the scanned circle. So it's easy to aim the thing, and I know what area I'm measuring. These things only measure a very narrow angle, so it's useful to know what you're measuring.

I'm sure there are decent much cheaper ones, but I like mine.

I bought one from Harbor Freight. If I recall it cost $15 or so (though that was ~10 years ago). Seems to work fine and be reasonably accurate.

With that said, checking tire temps w/ an infrared isn't the best approach because the rubber surface cools pretty quickly and may not reflect the inner temperature of the tire. A probe-type pyrometer (~$100) is better because it gets below the cooler surface of the tread.

Infrared is perfectly fine. What you're looking for is the tire that's significantly different than the rest. Absolute accuracy not required.

I agree. I have about a thirty dollar one. It may or may not give the actual temperature 100 percent accurate, but it will tell you if one is way hotter than all the other ones. This is all it really can do anyway. I always surprised by the difference from the sunny side, to the shady side. As long as all are the same on each side, Im happy.

I have to wonder what you are trying to get with this?Tire temperature is most important when you are not at the rest stop but driving down the road. A TPSM system will also give you pressure along with temperatures. Am I missing your reason for using the infrared gun? TPSM is more expensive but far more accurate and time sensitive.

Been using an ir gun for years, stopped at rest stop one time a found one tag 20 degrees hotter than other one. Put gauge on it and found it at 20 psi. Do have to account for tires closest to engine and which ones in the sun. As said, just for comparison purposes, so not critical which one you get.

Wow, talk about timing! I just happen to have mine in front of me because I just brought it in to change the battery. It's a Ryobi IR002. I believe I bought it at Home Depot for something in the neighborhood of $30. Has been a great little unit. Tires, brakes, bearings, water heater, frying oil, BBQ grill...

Sticking brakes, hub bearings, air conditioner output, cooling water temps, exhaust manifold temps. Many, many uses for an ir gun. A great diagnostic tool.

When I had a dragging brake pad problem on one of our RV's, the technician used an IR temp. gun to verify that one brake was much hotter than the other. Absolute temp. wasn't what he was looking for. He was looking for a big difference between two supposedly identical brakes. The hotter one was dragging or working harder.

And the same thing with wheel bearings (particularly on trailers). If one is significantly hotter than the others, something's wrong with it.

Good tools for quick checks.
