Our inside step cover recently stopped working and felt lucky it was in the "up" position. Made replacing it very easy at 400 odd dollars from Newmar.

Before dumping it in the garbage I decided, as I couldn't break it any worse, I'd tear it apart to see what was to see. After reassembling it, I hooked it up to a battery I was shocked to see it worked! I am hesitant to put it back in the coach as if it stopped working in the down position, I have no idea how you would get to it to replace it. So my question is: How would you replace the motor it it was in the down position? There is no access from underneath which I suppose means you rip the wooden backing off the step?

As a side note I discovered you can get the same actuator from the manufacture for 1/2 the price.

Because of the 10 years difference in or coaches , I have no idea what system is in use in your coach , and the component locations .

When my step cover actuator quit ( cover down ) I was able to raise the cover , by accessing/removing the bolt that connected the cover to the actuator with the entry door open .
Testing of my actuator , showed that the wiring to the units internal limit switch , had broken ; inside the wire insulation ; where the wiring entered the housing.
By-passing the limit switch got the actuator working , now I just have to pay attention to the operation , as holding the switch too long will blow the fuse.
Three years and only one blown fuse.

As you found there are many different suppliers & retailers and the closer you get to the actual producer in the supply chain the lower the price will be.

have a question as my step cover is in the down position (2008 kountry star) what bolt? any help would be greatly appreciated,

As I mentioned , in my post to jbikes1, I have no idea what your newer set up looks like , but on my 99 DSDP , with the entry door open and the step cover down , the attachment bolt ( actuator to underside of cover ) was just visible , in a 1 1/2" gap between the actuator cover and the step cover attachment .

I'll be in the coach this afternoon and take a picture , if you could take a picture of your set up ( under side of cover with the entry door open) maybe I can see an option for your repair.

Sorry bit the step is in the down position and i am trying to figure a good way of releasing it so i can raise it up and replace the actuator. It is an 08 kountry star 3910. Thanks for the quick reply.

As I mentioned in my previous post; I have no idea what changes in the step cover and actuator went on in the years between our coaches being produced .
But here's what the connection between the actuator and the folding step looked like in a 99DSDP. All pictures taken through the open entry door.
1 , close up of connecting bolt
2, wider angle showing actuator cover ( note original carpet in this area was replaced with vinyl tiles as was the carpet in the drivers area. ) Retaining screws for this cover were buried in the carpet.

3, step in 2/3 up position .
