Inverter Settings

I did a search and haven't seen any recent discussions on inverter setting. Two weeks ago I added a Magnum BMK (battery monitoring kit) to my coach. I like that the BMK can give you State of Charge (SOC) which tells you the percentage of charge, versus a battery level like 12.2 or 12.3 volts.

I noticed after a two weeks that the SOC, never reached 100%, even after sitting for a week plugged into shore power and showing that I was Float Charging. I called Magnum today thinking that I may need to check my inverter settings. Sure enough, as we went through them, they were all set to the default settings from the factory, with the exception of the battery type.

My 2019 Harris Battery Company batteries (Newmar OEM's) are rated at 210 amp hours each, which equals a bank size of (8 batteries times 210 amp hours, equals 1680 amp hours divided by 2, because they're six volts being used in a 12 volt system). That gave me a battery bank of 840 amps. My inverter was set at 400.

The Absorb Rate was set at 2.5 hours and Magnum recommended 3.5 hours. Looking at the Magnum instructions and charts, they rate battery banks by amp hour minutes, but the display uses amp hour hours. My battery bank of 840 amps falls in the center of Magnums recommendation of 180 minutes or 3.0 hours, which is where I set it.

Lastly, the Charge Rate was set at 80%. Magnum recommended the AGM's be set at 100%.

Sooooo…...You might want to check your Inverter and make sure it's setup correctly. It looks like Newmar may be leaving the inverters set at their default settings and just correcting the battery type, versus actually going through and making everything match.

The only thing I didn't set and will do tomorrow is the Low Battery cutoff.

Don, you may want to look at your absorb done setting. I could never get the soc back to 100% until I set absorb done to soc.

I also set the final stage to Multi, which now works once absorb is set to soc.

I wonder if the amp hr size was set to 400 purposefully. I remember reading something about wanting to only utilize about half of the available amp hr capacity.

No, just the BMK.

I'm at 100% now after resetting.

That's another reason I carry five fire extinguishers. Never know when you might need one to stop a fire while they get the occupants out.

Came across a pickup truck and travel trailer that had just rolled over about 10 minutes before I got there, everybody got out OK and no fire.

Great timing Don, I have replaced the remote, purchased the BMK and have had the cables made. I just haven’t found time to install the BMK. I have been researching the proper settings, especially with the added features of the upgraded remote.

Your post is a big help, thanks!

Do a rest of running it down to 90 and make sure it will recover to 100
I was having trouble there

What are the key features with the BMK and the upgraded ME-ARC?

The BMK is like a fuel gauge for your batteries. If you install a BMK, an ARC50 is a must. The ARC gives you a lot more parameters like the ability to set your AGS to start / stop using SOC rather than voltage. It also has a lot of cool features like "battery Top Off'. If you are dry camping and you are out for dinner, visiting friends or anything else, it starts your generator to top off your batteries up to 2 hours before Quiet Time arrives. There are many other funtions with the ARC.

Thanks

I’m assuming you shut power down, remove the old controller and plug in the ARC and go through the setting?

I swapped out the RC with arc without powering anything down. It has just a single phone cable for connection.
