IOTA auto transfer box problems

We just had a lot of electrical items burn up because the IOTA auto transfer box shorted out and we had 220 volts going to most all electric outlets. Would first recommend checking all screws that tighten wires to be tightened. But really from what we have found out the IOTA auto transfer box should be replaced. This was on our 04 Essex but I think most Newmar had this box till around 2009 or 2010. IOTA box is made of plastic and has IOTA on the front cover and will be in your electric service cabinet.

I assume the two legs loosened and "bridged"?

Did the breaker box eventually trip? Any chance it could have caught fire?

Sorry this happened.

They are junk. If fact, I was told they removed the product from their product line. I had 2 failures in our '05. I'd check with Newmar to see what they're using then buy it somewhere else to get a better price.

Is that a different model from the IOTA ITS-50R transfer switch that was recalled a couple of years ago?

It's relatively easy to see what Newmar is using now, 007 has covered this topic in his Quick Tips and in many posts. Go to Parts Lookup and click the Access ComNet button, then click "CATALOG - MODEL YEAR" and drill down through the categories until you find the part you want. Doing that it looks like they are using a Progressive Dynamics PD52 on a 2014 DSDP, they used one on our 2008 Canyon Star also.

Yes, Monaco and Keystone both issued recalls for this switch in 2012, not sure about Newmar.

Before IOTA they were called TODD and that company went out of business due to so many lawsuits regarding fires.

They started another company called IOTA and the rest is history. After awhile they quit making transfer switches because they had NO CLUE how to make a good reliable one.

The only transfer switch that I will have in my coach is an ESCO Lyght 50 amp. Mine is still original and going strong after 12 years.

I am sure there are other brands that work just as good but why fix something that isn't broken and has worked so well for so many years.

For anyone that currently has an IOTA Transfer Switch in their coach, I would recommend removing it ASAP.

My coach, built in July 2009, has the Progressive Dynamics PD52 transfer switch mentioned above. On my build list, it shows as a replacement for the Iota unit so change-over must have been prior to 2009.
