Kwikee Series 47 Steps - Broken Slides

The slides on my Kwikee Series 47 steps are breaking. Seems like I could replace the whole step assembly (Newmar - $2,526.41) or just replace the slides themself. I found a parts diagram on the Newmar website. Looks like item #14 (373586) which includes 4 slides. The slides appear to be available from Lippert for $108.

One half of the slide appears to be riveted onto the step frame and the other half to the step itself. I didn't see any latches that drawer slides typically have to separate the two halves allowing the steps to be removed while leaving the frame attached to the coach. Are then any? Seems like I could drill out the old rivets and rivet the new slides in their place. Seem like I'll probably have to remove the whole step assembly.

DSD recently mentioned that he had removed the steps from his Dutch Start. Has anyone replaced the slides? Looking for any lessons learned.

Also, the slides are stamped "Jonathan 477021 MFR SK721". Before finding the Lippert part number I was searching the web for a source for this slides. Didn't see them out there, but they must be as this is what Lippert installed. Anyone know where I can purchase them (other than from Lippert)?

Search heavy duty drawer slides

Several places on the web nothing special just get the heaviest that will fit length wise

Thicknesses is critical height not so much

I reached out to both Lippert (the manufacturer of the steps) and Jonathan Engineering. Jonathan tells me that the slides are manufactured for Lippert and are proprietary. It can only be purchased through Lippert.

Lippert has the part available for $83 ea. The steps use 4 of them. So it will cost me about $400 (including shipping, rivets, etc) to replace the slides. From there I’ll need to drill out the 48 rivets so that I can rivet the new slides into place. Newmar wants $2,500 for new steps. So far I haven’t found the Series 47 steps elsewhere (eTrailer had one but it’s used).

Finally got around to repairing my Kwikee steps. I ended up ordering four new slides from Lippert at $83 each. Drilled out the old steel rivets. A total of 24 of them. Purchased 250 new rivets from Zoro for $12. Lippert wanted $7 each!

While I was at it I took a wire brush to the steps and then painted them.

Last year I replaced the step controller and found out about a month later that the $50 Amazon version didn’t work quite the same. The problem was that with the engine running and the step lockout switch on, the steps would retract when the door was closed, but wouldn’t extend when the door opened. Our work around was to turn the lockout switch off and the steps would retract and extend correctly when the engine was running.

I wanted the steps to operate as originally design so I added a relay just before the controller such that when the ignition was on (terminal 86), the lockout feature would be turned off (terminals 30 & 87a).
