LED Headlight Upgrade - The correct way

I have not yet taken delivery of my 2022 London Air, but I know the headlights are halogen.

for my 2019, I replaced the halogen bulbs with LED bulbs. These where a lot brighter, and made driving at night comfortable for me, but not for oncoming traffic. I had to deal with constant flashing by oncoming traffic, which tells me that I was causing them harm.

I have been doing a lot of research, and found the proper way to fix the headlights.

For an LED to work, it needs a projector designed for the light that will focus the beam exactly where you need it, and prevent it from encroaching oncoming traffic. When a H11 or 9003 halogen is replaced with an LED bulb, the pattern is no longer the same as designed. A lot of light is focused up in the trees, or oncoming traffic.

The process that I am using will work for any vehicle. There are lots of LED projectors on the market. This video compares various options, and shows how they are tested along with LUX output.

The total of the parts is under $1,000.00.

I will also be upgrading my Suburban once I have done this set. I am planning on using the suburban housing and not purchasing a donor set. Once I have completed the London air setup, I will have a better idea of my confidence level.

I plan on taking pictures along the way, and will post details to this thread.

Thanks RB, looking forward to your upgrade.

The headlights on my 2021 Essex so dim I don't like driving at night, would love to do your upgrade myself if you are happy with the results.

We ordered and installed a set of LED lights from Headlight Revolution. Expensive but they are worth it when we end up getting stuck driving at night, which we generally avoid.

Your headlights is from a 2014-2016 Corolla.

You are very luck, as there is a direct swap kit available for yours.

In the process of doing the same. Those M Led 2.0 are nice. Made a mount to hold the reflector in a permanent position. Aim the original bulb, remove and install the 2.0 then put it back in the "jig" and aim accordingly so it's really close before putting the headlight back together. Should make the final aiming after installing back in the coach easier.

I found that the Harbor Freight drill is really close to the size needed for the thread/nut mounting style.

Hope your retro-fit goes great!

Thanks for the info!

Glenn

If you are doing just a bulb swap, then you are not getting a focused pattern. This means you are losing a lot of light that should be focused at the road in front of you, and instead lighting the oncoming traffic lanes and the trees above you.

Yes, it is better than stock halogen. Yes, it makes a big difference, but you are blinding oncoming traffic, and potentially blinding yourself if too much is focused on the road directly in front of you.

When I did my 2019, I used lasfit bulbs. They where a big imrpovement.

I noticed that my brights where nothing more than the dims, and more importantly, I noticed a lot of oncoming traffic was "flashing" me. Doing some research, I came across this video that does a great job of explaining the problem.

If your patience is tested by me attempting to be thorough, here's how to skip past stuff:

Brief Unboxing: 0:39
Quick Installation Overview: 2:12
LED vs Halogen brightness tests: 5:12
LED vs Halogen glare to oncoming drivers: 7:28
More about installing LEDs in halogen reflectors: 10:01
Final review/conclusions: 16:23

That is a great idea on the Jig. I was going to use the table / tape method, but I think the jig is a much safer way to reproduce the settings. Thanks!

Good for you for recognizing a problem and correcting it, and a pox on people who just replace their headlight bulbs with LED bulbs. And, while I'm at it, a pox on people who keep their driving lights on all of the time - or just use driving lights and no headlights. These dummies don't realize that using driving lights only does not illuminate their tail lights

There. I feel better, end of rant.
