Smile Locking Gas Caps

I have a 2017 Canyon Star and am embarking on a long trip. It was suggested to have a locking gas cap. I've tried a number of sources with no solution. Does anyone have a manufacturer and model number to make my life a little easier ?

I have Stant brand locking caps on my Kountry Star diesel pusher.

I realize you have a gas powered coach, but I'm sure Stant makes locking caps for that too.

I'm not familiar with the Newmar gas coaches. My Newmar KSDP has fuel fillers on both sides. Do you have two fillers -- one on each side of the coach? If so, you'll want your locking caps matched so they use the same key. I made that mistake when I ordered from Amazon -- and my two caps came with different keys. Grrrrrr.

After asking around, it looks like the only way to get two locking gas caps with matching keys is to buy them in person -- and look at the key codes on the boxes before you buy.

Small thing, but important to me. One less key, a lot less fumbling.

I bought a non-locking gas cap at Walmart to replace the one for my Bay Star that I left at a gas station somewhere. They had a number of different caps both locking and non-locking. I had some trouble finding the right model, as the book hanging by the caps did not list current F53 models. I finally bought 5 of them, took them out to my motorhome and tried them all. The one that seemed to fit best was a Stant model no. 10841. Of course, since you still have your original cap, perhaps you can just take it into the store and match it with one there.

I have never had a problem with someone tampering with my gasoline, so I decided not to go with the locking cap. And since I'd already left my original cap somewhere, I was afraid I might lose the key to a locking cap and not be able to fill up when I needed to.

Hi frankiebwi,
Stant is the brand you want. Follow the previous posters advice.

Like dmholt, we never had any issue with "losing" gas from our Canyon Star, even when stored over the winter in an un-fenced storage lot in the middle of our town. I did try to siphon gas out of it one time using a store-bought siphon and was unable to. Probably because of the long filler neck and relatively tortuous route to the tank.

At a Newmar International Rally seminar afew years back, the question was ask about a locking cap. The guy said; “ you can do that if you want, however, be advised that if they want your fuel bad enough, the connection from the receiver to the tank is a rubber hose. With a screw driver or knife, they still get your gas, and you get to keep your cap and buy a real expensive replacement hose.... cheaper to let them have your gas”

For those who don't want to forget cap, like on today's new cars, take a nice piece of wire, and put a ring terminal on the end, then screw that to the cap, and find a place for the other end, ring terminal and screw that end in. I did it on my current coach, and have never lost the cap because of the little piece of wire.

Exactly what happened to the bus at the retirement center I worked at - twice. Would have been cheaper to let the have the gas, which they got anyway. Then add in the cost of repairs and replacing the gas.
